Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Lady Lions Fall To Missouri Western In Overtime

The Lindenwood women's soccer team could not take advantage of its chances in the second half and fell to Missouri Western, 1-0, Sunday afternoon from Hunter Stadium.

Each team struggled to put the ball in the back of the net despite having some good opportunities throughout the half. Missouri Western controlled the possession the first 10 minutes, but could only get a couple shots with neither making its way to goalkeeper Mary McGilvray.

The Lady Lions put some pressure on the Griffons defense thereafter as Jackie Lindner continue to spur energy in the Lindenwood midfield. Along with Olivia Callipari and Alyssa Houck, the hosts were gaining quality chances close to the box, but Missouri Western goalkeeper Lexie Martin knocked away the shots.

In the 40th minute, a centering pass from Houck set up Kat Roe from the top of the box, but the shot sailed high for the junior. A few minutes later, the Lady Lions managed a corner kick opportunity and Callipari found the head of Brittany Steiger, but the ball went just over the crossbar.

At the half, Lindenwood held the edge in shots 8-4, and had both shots on goal between the teams. Roe led all players with three shots, while Becky Roberts, Kristin Brewer, and Payton Williams each had one.

The Lady Lions came out firing in the second half, controlling the ball and momentum. Houck had space inside the box and fired a shot that was knocked right back to her. The junior shot it again, but the Missouri Western keeper turned it away again.

Lindenwood had four corners in the half, but failed to capitalize on any. Roe and Roberts had quality chances, but both had shots go just wide. Williams put a shot on goal late in the half, but Griffons Lexie Martin continued to stand tall.

Head coach Laurie Kaminski knew her team had its chances, but could not find the back of the net. "It's an indication of how every game will be from here on out in the MIAA."

"[We] have to find a way to put a couple in."

After an indirect kick chance with a few minutes left in the half, Lindner placed the ball inside the box, but nothing came to fruition as the match would head to overtime.

Just over eight minutes into the first overtime period, Missouri Western's Maddy Cowell put pressure on McGilvray and knocked a shot off the keeper to force a corner kick. On the attempt, Cowell found Bailey Dervin, who slipped the shot just past a diving McGilvray to score the golden goal and win it for the visitors.

Kaminski admits the loss is tough, but the team cannot afford to linger on today's play. "Out focus has now shifted to the Northwest game on Friday and a rematch with Missouri Western on Sunday."

The Lady Lions outshot the Griffons 7-4 in the second half, but Missouri Western controlled the overtime period. Martin made all seven saves for the Griffons, while McGilvray made three.

The second consecutive loss brings Lindenwood to 3-2-0 on the season, while the Griffons improve to 5-1. The Lady Lions will travel to Maryville, Mo. next Friday to take on Northwest Missouri.
