Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Women’s Hockey Falls at No. 2 Minnesota in Season Opener

The Lindenwood women's hockey team lost to the No. 2 ranked and defending national champion, Minnesota Golden Gophers by a final score of 3-0 on Friday evening. The game was played at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, Minn.

Minnesota controlled played for a large portion of the first period, outshooting Lindenwood 11-2 during the opening 20 minutes. Despite the disparity in shots, the Lady Lion defense highlighted by goaltender Jolene deBruyn, was up for the challenge as they skated even with the Golden Gophers for the first period, which ended even at 0-0.

Minnesota would score 88 seconds into the second period, gaining a 1-0 advantage. The goal was credited to Sarah Potomak. The Golden Gophers would light the lamp twice more during the second period, as Carra Piazza and Megan Wolfe lit the lamp. Lindenwood would send six shots on goal during the period, but were unable to find the back of the net.

Just as it did in the first period, Lindenwood successfully held Minnesota off of the score sheet during the third period. However over the final 20 minutes, the Golden Gophers limited the Lady Lions to just two shots, and prevailed by a final score of 3-0.

deBruyn made the start in goal for Lindenwood, turning in a 27 save performance. deBruyn totaled a game-high 11 saves in the first period of action.
Eight Lady Lions registered shots in the game, as Kaitlyn Davidson and Holly Dietzler led the way with two shots apiece.

Britannia Gillanders had a strong showing in the faceoff circle, winning a team-leading seven of her 14 draws.

The Lady Lion power-play unit was 0-2 during the game, failing to score on opportunities in the first and second periods.

Lindenwood's penalty-kill successfully killed off each of its two opportunities, holding Minnesota scoreless with the man advantage.

When speaking after the game, Lindenwood head coach Scott Spencer said, "I'm real happy with our play tonight. Obviously we would like to create more offense, but we competed and battled, and didn't give the Gophers any easy plays. They are a very fast team, and defending national champions. They're a very good hockey team."

Following the loss, the Lady Lions move to 0-1-0 to begin the 2016-17 season. With the victory, the Golden Gophers improve to 1-0-0 on the season. The two teams will return to the Ridder Arena ice tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. to conclude the two game series.
