The Lindenwood women's soccer team lost a competitive 1-0 double-overtime battle to Fort Hays State on a rainy Friday night.
Each team exchanged touches consistently through the first 20 minutes of the first half, but neither team took advantage of any opportunities.
Becky Roberts dribbled the ball to the left side of the field then traveled back towards the middle before launching a shot slightly wide left of the goal at the 12:57 mark. From there on out, Fort Hays dictated possession of the ball.
Fort Hays registered five attempted shots throughout the first half including two blocked from 10 yards away within a four second span by Jasmine Beaulieu close to the 23-minute mark. After a Lady Lion corner attempt by Roberts at the 19:35 mark, the Tigers intercepted the shot and sprinted across the field towards
Mary McGilvray and the goal-post. The Tigers' Taryn Schnell kicked the ball towards the right side of the goal in which McGilvray batted the ball away off a leaping dive to save the Lady Lions from the deficit.
Seven minutes before the half, the Tigers had another opportunity to score off the right wing, but kicked straight at McGilvray for the Lady Lions' second save of the game.
The Lady Lions gathered more valuable possessions at the beginning of the second half as
Kat Roe nearly squeaked by with a goal at the 53:54 mark, but the Tigers' goalie Abbie Flax caught the shot towards the left side of the goal. Roe attempted another shot eight minutes later, but the shot went too high over the goal. One minute later, Roe continued to keep the ball on the Lady Lions' side of the field and sent a laser from the right wing towards the goal, but Flax stopped her once again.
As rain began to pour, the Tigers took control on offense from the 68-minute to the 80-minute mark as they recorded five shots and a corner kick.
Miranda Huebner stopped a fast-break chance at the 70-minute mark for the Tigers when Kelsey Steffens was out-running the Lady Lions with the ball. Huebner glided out of nowhere and slid across Steffens from the left side to bat the ball away.
The Lady Lions applied pressure on the Tigers in waning minutes of the second half including two shots-on-goal by Roberts. However, with just nine seconds remaining,
Alyssa Houck received a pass from Roe and sprinted side-to-side with two Tiger defenders. With a clear look at the goal from the right wing, Houck drove a shot towards the left side of the goal, but went just wide.
In the first overtime, both teams struggled to gain any momentum until the Tigers attempted a shot halfway through that was saved by McGilvray. With one minute left, the Tigers took another shot 13 yards away from the goal, but the Lady Lions blocked it to send the game into double-overtime.
The Lady Lions garnered a couple chances as
Alexis Robbers shot twice, but could not convert. Houck once again had a chance to seal the game with a missile towards the right side of the goal, but the Tigers denied her. Then Thalya Dwyer of the Tigers drove through a patch of Lady Lion defenders and scored the game-winning goal with just one minute remaining in the game.
"Tonight was a dramatic loss to a quality team," Coach
Laurie Kaminski said after the game. "We put up one good fight against them. Our girls played with everything they had and left it all on the field.
"That kind effort should have rewarded, but going forward if they continue with that overall effort and play, we will be just fine."
After the loss, the Lady Lions fall to 4-3-1 and 1-1-0 in the MIAA for the season while Fort Hays improves to 6-2-1 and 2-0-0 in the MIAA. Lindenwood will return to Hunter Stadium on Sunday at 1:30 pm to take on MIAA-rival Nebraska-Kearney.
