The Lindenwood women's hockey team upset the No. 7 Robert Morris Colonials by a final score of 2-1 in a CHA matchup on Friday evening from the 84 Lumber Arena in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Robert Morris entered the contest on a 13 game unbeaten streak and as the top-ranked team in the CHA. The Colonials had not lost a game in regulation this season. The victory was Lindenwood's second over a ranked opponent in its last three games.
The first period opened slowly, with Robert Morris holding a 3-1 advantage on shots after eight minutes of play. With 8:27 showing on the clock,
Britannia Gillanders gave Lindenwood a 1-0 lead with her third goal of the season.
Holly Dietzler picked up the assist on Gillanders' first period goal, her first point of the season.
Robert Morris would outshoot Lindenwood 8-6 after 20 minutes of play, but the Lady Lions maintained the one-goal lead.
During the second period Lindenwood was whistled off the ice for four separate minor penalties. The Lady Lion penalty-kill unit successfully handled the Colonials power play and withstood the penalties, keeping Robert Morris off the scoreboard for the duration of the middle period.
Lindenwood headed into the second intermission with a 1-0 lead. The Lady Lions entered Friday's contest with a record of 3-0-0 when holding the lead after two periods.
Robert Morris would draw even to begin the third period, as the team's leading goal scorer Brittany Howard found the back of the net for the 14th time this season. Howard's even-strength goal came at the 4:01 mark of the third period.
Robert Morris registered the next significant scoring chance just over three minutes later, when Jaycee Gebhard received a penalty shot chance. Lindenwood netminder
Jolene deBruyn turned Gebhard asisde on the penalty shot, keeping the score even at 1-1.
Late in the period,
Tirra Lemoine received a pass from
Carrie Atkinson and unleashed a wrist shot that beat the Robert Morris goaltender on her glove side, giving Lindenwood a 2-1 lead.
Sarah Bobrowski notched the second assist on the play, her third assist of the season. Lemoine's third period score was her first tally of the season, and would prove to be the first game-winning goal of her career.
deBruyn made a season-high 36 saves in goal for Lindenwood, including 21 saves in the second period.
Robert Morris would hold the edge in shots 37-24.
Lindenwood failed to capitalize on any of its five power-play chances, while holding Robert Morris scoreless on its six opportunities.
Following the victory Lindenwood improves to 5-13-2 on the season, and 3-5-1 in conference play. With the loss, Robert Morris moves to 14-2-5 and 7-1-1 from within the CHA. The two teams will return to the ice tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. ET to conclude the two-game series.
