The Lindenwood women's hockey team fell to the Syracuse Orange by a final score of 5-0 on Friday evening from Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, Mo. The game was the Fifth Annual Pink the Rink Night for the Lady Lions.
Syracuse controlled the action during the opening period, lighting the lamp three times, including two power-play goals. Savannah Rennie opened the scoring for the Orange with an even-strength goal at the 4:43 mark of the period. Stephanie Grossi and Emily Costales would follow with power-play scores, as Syracuse headed to the first intermission with a three-goal lead.
Lindenwood and Syracuse skated even during the second period, as neither team found the back of the net. The Lady Lions were whistled off the ice four times for minor penalties, while the Orange were called for two infractions during the penalty filled second period. After 40 minutes of play, Syracuse maintained its three-goal margin.
Syracuse would score twice on the power play during the final period, bringing the game to its final score of 5-0. Larissa Martyniuk and Allie Munroe netted the third-period goals for the Orange.
Jolene deBruyn made the start between the pipes for Lindenwood, stopping 31 of the 36 shots sent her way.
Syracuse held the edge in shots 36-14 for the game.
Taylor Girard led the way for the Lady Lions with four shots on goal.
Lindenwood failed to score on any of its six power-play opportunities, while Syracuse capitalized on four of its 11 chances.
Following the loss, Lindenwood moves to 5-15-2 and 3-7-1 in conference play. With the victory, Syracuse improves its record to 8-10-5 and 7-2-2 from within the CHA. The two teams will return to the Lindenwood Ice Arena to conclude the two-game series.
