Women’s Hockey Edged in Overtime Against No. 6 Minnesota

The Lindenwood women's hockey team dropped its series finale in overtime against the No. 6 Minnesota Golden Gophers on Sunday afternoon from Lindenwood Ice Arena in Wentzville, Mo. Taylor Girard scored two goals for the Lions, including a game-tying penalty shot late in the third period to send the game to overtime.

Minnesota took a 2-0 lead into the first period intermission, scoring two even-strength goals during the opening frame. Lindenwood goaltender Jolene deBruyn stopped 21 shots during the first period.

Taylor Girard got Lindenwood on the scoreboard at the 6:53 mark of the second period, creating a turnover in front of the Minnesota net, and scoring an unassisted goal. For Girard, the score was her team-leading seventh of the season.

Lindenwood would tie the game at 2-2 nearly four minutes later while on the power play. Cierra Paisley found the back of the net for the Lions, scoring her fourth goal of the season. Sierra Burt and Courtney Ganske picked up the assists on the play.

Minnesota regained the lead, scoring just 1:46 after Paisley's goal. The Golden Gophers carried the one-goal lead into the second intermission.

Lindenwood trailed by the one-goal margin for the majority of the third period, until Girard was awarded a penalty shot with 6:21 left in the game. Girard ripped a shot into the upper left corner to pull the Lions even at 3-3.

The game remained tied for the remainder of the third period and headed to a five-minute overtime period.

Minnesota scored a power-play goal just 50 seconds into the overtime period, securing a 4-3 victory.

deBruyn finished the afternoon with 43 saves in goal for Lindenwood.

With the loss, Lindenwood moves to 2-9-1 on the season. The Lions will travel to Syracuse, N.Y. for a two-game series with the Syracuse Orange on December 1-2. Puck drop on Friday is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET.
