Things to Know
• The Lindenwood men's basketball team opens its 2018-19 season on Friday with three games in three days as part of the Division II Tip-Off Classic from Orange, Calif.Â
• Each of Lindenwood's first two opponents qualified for the NCAA Division II National Tournament last season and had a combined winning percentage of .779 during the 2017-18 campaign.
• Azusa Pacific, Lindenwood's opponent on Friday, is currently receiving votes in the NABC Preseason Poll, while West Texas A&M, Lindenwood's Saturday matchup, was ranked fourth in the poll.
• Lindenwood will face each of its three opponents this weekend for the first time in its program history since joining the NCAA Division II ranks prior to the start of the 2012-13 season.
•The Lions return 81.4 percent of their total scoring from last season's team that won 16 games and finished 10th in the MIAA.
• Last season, the Lions were led by a defense that held opponents under 70 points and finished in the top-50 in NCAA Division II for the fourth straight season.
• Lindenwood's 2017-18 offense was in the top-10 nationally by turning the ball over less than 10 times a game.
• Lindenwood was picked eighth in the MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll and the MIAA Preseason Media Poll.
• Heading into the 2018-19 season, the Lions have the nation's top strength of schedule according to the recently released Massey Ratings.
Lindenwood Notes
• Lindenwood returns two players that received all-MIAA honors last season.
Chandler Diekvoss and
Brad Newman were each recognized as honorable mention all-MIAA performers following the 2017-18 season.
• Newman was Lindenwood's leading scorer last season, averaging 15.3 points per game and totaling 444 points over his 29 starts.
• Newman connected on 89.8 percent of his free-throws during his junior season, the second-best percentage in the MIAA and the 13th-best in NCAA Division II.
• Newman reached double-digit points in a team-high 25 games last season.
• Newman, Diekvoss, and
Adam Pohlman were the only three Lions to start in each of the team's 29 games last season.
• Diekvoss has 1,021 career points, and ranks 12th all-time in scoring in program history.
• Diekvoss averaged 14.3 points per game last season, while also grabbing a team-high 6.5 rebounds per contest.
• With a mark of 3.7 assists-to-turnovers, Pohlman ranked third in NCAA Division II last season.
• Pohlman led Lindenwood in minutes played last season, averaging 33 minutes per contest. Newman was the only other Lion to average over 30 minutes per game.
• Pohlman also led the team in steals in 2017-18, totaling 49 steals for the year, the second-highest total in the MIAA.
• Defense was the key for the Lions a season ago. Lindenwood played to a 14-6 record when holding its opponent under 70 points. Over the last three seasons, the Lions are 41-15 when limiting their opponents to fewer than 70 points.
• Lindenwood got off to a hot start last season, winning 10 of its first 13 games through the end of December. In their three seasons under head coach
Lance Randall, the Lions have a record of 28-11 over the first two months of the season.
• The Lions return 87 percent of their rebounding from last season, including the team's top seven individual rebounders.
• Lindenwood will play 12 of its first 14 games away from Hyland Arena, including the first seven games of the season. Lindenwood will play in St. Charles, Mo. just three times before January 3, 2019.
• Lindenwood is 26-22 away from Hyland Arena over the last three seasons. That includes a 5-1 mark in neutral site contests.
• Lindenwood is unbeaten in its last three season openers dating back to the start of the 2015-16 season, with all three wins being away from St. Charles, Mo.
