The Lindenwood field hockey team secured a 3-1 win over the Converse Valkyries on Sunday afternoon from Hunter Stadium in St. Charles, Mo.
Bridget Hoogendijk became the first Lion in program history to eclipse 100-career points, scoring two goals to power the Lindenwood offense.
GAME OVERVIEW
The Lindenwood offense was the story throughout the game, dictating the pace of play from the opening whistle. Lindenwood outshot Converse by a 6-1 total in the opening quarter, but trailed the Valkyries by a 1-0 score after 15 minutes of play. Converse scored the lone goal of the quarter in in the 12th minute of play.
Lindenwood continued to pour it on offensively in the second quarter, accounting for all 10 shots in the period. Despite that edge in shots, the Lions were unable to break through, and entered halftime trailing by a 1-0 score.
After 7:10 of play in the third period, Lindenwood managed to pull even with Converse, as Hoogendijk found the back of the cage.
Caro Theunisz was credited with the assist on the game-tying goal.
Just 4:34 later, the Lions moved ahead of the Valkyries for good, as Hoogendijk beat the Converse goalkeeper for the second time in the game.
Taylor Sullivan earned the assist on Hoogendijk's second goal.
Lindenwood protected its one-goal lead into the fourth quarter, and after 2:34 of play in the final frame, the Lions extended the lead to a 3-1 margin.
Mary Clare Banholzer ripped a shot from 10 yards out on the right side to pick up her first goal of the season. Theunisz notched her second assist of the day on the play.
Lindenwood managed to hold off Converse for the remainder of the afternoon, recording the 3-1 victory, and improving its record to 6-4 on the season.
