Women's rugby earned a 63-0 shutout of Brigham Young University Saturday afternoon at Infinity Park in Glendale, Colorado. Lindenwood scored 11 tries in the contest to finish the fall campaign with a perfect mark of 5-0.
Aniya Matina Scores for the Lions
Head Coach
Billy Nicholas summarized the game plan.
"BYU has had a very successful fall and we knew going into our match with them that they were going to be a very strong and direct team in attack," he said. "We wanted to apply pressure on defense and really focus on our ability to win the contact point and execute. Holding such a strong team off the scoreboard was great for us. Our overall goal was to develop this fall and build our depth. We did that and are excited at the potential we still have to build our chemistry and hit our stride the rest of the season."
Aniya Matina was named the Forward MVP and
Kapoina Bailey was named the Backs MVP. The match was held in conjunction with the WPL Championships hosted by USA Rugby. The weekend also included a special recruitment event between collegiate programs and WPL teams.
In addition to the game, the Lions spent some of the day working a community youth clinic with several different high school student-athletes.
"It was a pleasure to connect with East High School coach Keri and see quite a few student-athletes from various high schools in Colorado," Coach Nicholas said. "The Lindenwood team had a blast teaching skills and strategy and helping to grow the sport."
The women's rugby first XV has not lost a 15's match since September 2017 versus the WPL Glendale Merlins, so the Lions extended their winning streak to over two years. In the five matches played this fall, they outscored their opponents 387-36. Lindenwood will try to extend that streak when play resumes in the spring.
