The Lions second XV stopped the St. Louis Bombers 29-5 Friday night at the Hunter Stadium in St. Charles, Missouri.
Facing a couple inches of snow and a Bombers squad that featured some former Lindenwood standouts including
Corey Harmann,
Jack Huckstepp, and
George O'Sullivan, the Lions displayed some impressive defense, highlighted by some devastating tackles from freshman prop
Sione Nasilai. The outstanding pressure forced some ill-advised clearing kicks, but the conditions of the pitch and freezing temperatures stunted both offenses. Lindenwood was still able to slowly gain position and after 30 minutes, the attack started clicking, resulting in tries from Nasilai and
Reece Botha, who also slotted both conversions, to give the Lions a 14-0 lead at the break.
Lindenwood started the second half quickly with Drake Humphrey scoring early to extend the advantage to 19, but the Bombers kept working, and eventually they pinpointed some Lions breakdowns and made some gains in and around the rucks. Some veteran knowhow moved St. Louis down the field for a try in the 49
th minute to make it 19-5 Lindenwood. The Lions quickly squashed any thoughts of a comeback from there as
Cody Erhardt and
Tyler Stoltman each displayed some solid front-foot play. Lindenwood booted a penalty kick and Humphrey added a late converted try just before the final whistle to seal the victory, which improved the Lions record to 12-2 overall.
