Women's water polo swept three games in Midwest Division play February 16-17 at the Sumers Rec Center Millstone Pool in St. Louis, Missouri. The Lady Lions topped Washington University 15-4 and Illinois State 16-8 on Saturday, and then stopped Washington University a second time 22-4 on Sunday. Lindenwood also picked up a forfeit against Saint Louis University.
In the opening match of the weekend against the Bears, the offense was led by
Abby VerMeer with five goals and two assists.
Naomi Sanders was close behind with three markers and a pair of helpers.
Isabella Boccia scored twice and added two assists,
Noelle Redman also scored twice while earning one assist. Single goals came from
Madelynn Klein-Courville,
Paige Miller, and
Sydney Walsh. On the defensive side of the ball, VerMeer again led the team with four steals, with Redman also tallying the same. Miller had three and
Nicole Howe two. Singles steals came from
Kayla Hamilton, Sanders, Boccia, Klein-Courville, and
Harmony Moran. Moran also stopped four shots while in goal.
In the second contest of the weekend against the Redbirds, Klein-Courville paced the offense with five goals, while
Emily Kini scored four times, and Sanders three. Boccia, Miller, and Howe each hit the back of the cage once. Howe was the assist leader with three, while Sanders, Boccia, Redman, and Miller each earned two helpers. Kini was also a force on defense with five steals to lead Lindenwood, followed by
Betsy Zanocco and Redman with three, Sanders with two, and Howe, Klein-Courville, and Moran with one each. Zanocco stopped four shots in goal with Moran getting three saves.
In the final game of the weekend for the Lady Lions and the second against Washington University, Miller paced the team with seven markers with Zanocco scoring three times. VerMeer, Boccia, Klein-Courville, and Redman each had two goals, while Sanders, Howe, Walsh, and Kini each scored once. Boccia was the assist leader with four, followed by Miller with three. Moran, Walsh, Olivia Coplin, and Redman each had one helper. Defense was ferocious, accumulating 23 steals overall, led by Boccia with four. Miller and Walsh each had three, VerMeer, Kini, Coplin, and Brooke Teson each had two, and Moran, Sanders, Redman, Klein-Courville, and Zanocco each had one take-away. Moran made two saves while Zanocco made four in split goaltending duty.
Lindenwood improved to 6-6 overall on the season and to 4-0 in conference. The Lady Lions travel across town to face McKendree March 17 in Lebanon, Illinois with a scheduled start time of 9 a.m. that Sunday morning.
