Lindenwood built a 6-1 lead after the first quarter and finished with a 14-6 victory over Colorado School of Mines in the first round of the 2019 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Women's National Collegiate Club Championship Friday afternoon at Rolf's Aquatic Center in South Bend, Indiana.
The No. 11 ranked Lions actually trailed after the first minute of play, but rattled off eight unanswered markers to build an 8-1 advantage early in the second quarter. The Orediggers, who are making their first appearance at the championship, stayed within striking distance by scoring a man-advantage tally late in the second and an even strength goal early in the third, but Lindenwood five times while only giving up two the rest of the quarter to lead 13-5. Colorado School of Mines hit the back of the cage early in the fourth, but the Lions responded just 12 seconds later with 5:22 remaining. That proved to be the final goal of the game.
Hanna Muller scored five of the 14 Lindenwood markers and was named Player of the Game.
Isabella Boccia was close behind with four, while
Abby VerMeer,
Emily Kini,
Sydney Walsh,
Olivia Coplin, and
Naomi Sanders each added single goals.
Betsy Zanocco made five saves to earn the win in net for the Lions. Lindenwood scored three times on seven man-advantage chances while holding the Orediggers to just two goals out of 13 opportunities.
With the victory, the Lions advance to the second round against No. 5 ranked San Diego State. The Aztecs dominated their opening round contest 14-1 against Texas. The game is scheduled to begin at 10:10 a.m. Saturday morning at Rolf's Aquatic Center.
