Women’s Rugby Completes Trio of Championships for Second Straight Season

By virtue of a 34-12 victory over Army in the title match, the Lions claimed their second straight Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championship (CRC 7's) Sunday afternoon at Talen Energy Stadium in Chester, Pennsylvania, outside of Philadelphia.

Lindenwood jumped in front early with a try from Caring De Freitas, followed by a conversion from AnnaKaren Pedraza, but the Black Knights responded in the fifth minute to pull within two points.  The Lions extended the advantage to 17-5 in the closing moments of the first half when Sativa Tarau-Peehikuru and Aniya Matina each dotted down.  The offense continued to hum in the second half, helping Lindenwood pull away from Army.  Teresa Bueso Gomez crossed the line in the opening seconds, and then duplicated her efforts with another score.  Pedraza slotted the second conversion for a 29-5 lead.  Not to be outdone, De Freitas scampered in for her second try of the contest in the 12th minute before Army put the final points on the board in the final seconds.

Lindenwood advanced to the final with a 31-0 shutout against long-time rival Life University in the semifinals earlier in the day.  The game began with drives on each side, but no points.  The Lions broke the ice in the third minute when Richelle Stephens dotted down and followed it up with the conversion for a 7-0 advantage.  Kodi Barlow extended the lead moments later, but some frustration from Lindenwood resulted in a yellow card and a seven-on-six advantage for the Running Eagles, however they were not able to capitalize as the Lions defense stiffened, even while being short-handed.  After returning to even numbers in the second half, Lindenwood tacked on another three scores, one from Barlow and two from Charity Tenney, to clinch the win.

The Lions began the knock-out stages with a 25-0 shutout of Virginia Tech in the quarterfinals Saturday morning, and Lindenwood posted a perfect record in pool play on Friday, outscoring opponents by a combined 149-0.  The Lions started with a 34-0 victory over the Hokies, then stopped Queens University 53-0, and finished with a 62-0 win against Saint Joseph College (Ind.).

By winning the CRC 7's title, women's rugby swept all three major championships for the second season in a row.  Lindenwood captured the USA Rugby Collegiate 15's National Championship with a 36-19 victory over Life University in early April, and won the USA Rugby Women's Elite Sevens National Championship a week ago by defeating Dartmouth College 24-7 in Tucson, Arizona.
