MacKenzie Drost
afternoon at Sidner Arena in Fremont, Nebraska.
Kennedy Frank and
Dakota McAlpine set up the buzzer-beater and earned assists on the play.
After a Warriors slashing penalty early in the opening period, the Lions took an early 1-0 lead on an unassisted power play effort from
Marissa Delry at the 4:23 mark. Lindenwood added to the advantage midway through the second when
Risa Shatford sounded the horn at 9:20 with help from McAlpine and
Tessa O'Connor, but the 2-0 lead was precarious with about half the game left to play.
Midland mounted a comeback in the early moments of the third, scoring twice in the first five minutes, once a power play, to knot the contest at 2-2. A Lions tripping penalty with 10:35 remaining in regulation gave the Warriors a chance to take the lead, but the Lindenwood defense and goaltender
Maia Busi refused to yield. The Lions contained Midland for the rest of the period, which set up the last-second heroics.
Lindenwood outshot the Warriors 33 to 23, and Busi stopped 21 of the 23 pucks she faced to earn the win in goal. The Lions scored once on four power play opportunities while holding Midland to one goal on three chances.
Lindenwood improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play for the year. The Lions finish the two-game series with Midland Sunday afternoon with the opening faceoff set for 12 p.m. at the Sidner Arena in Fremont, Nebraska.
