After beginning the season with five straight wins overall and three straight in the Women's Midwest College Hockey (WMCH) conference, Lindenwood dropped its first game of the year 4-3 to Liberty University Sunday afternoon at the Lahaya Ice Center in Lynchburg, Virginia.
In a contest that featured six penalties from each team, the Lions fell behind early on an even strength goal in the first three minutes. The Flames increased their margin to 2-0 early in the second, but Lindenwood took advantage of a five-on-three opportunity with only nine seconds remaining in the period when
Kennedy Frank scored off a feed from
Risa Shatford.
The Lions entered the third period only trailing 2-1, but Liberty capitalized on back-to-back power plays in a span of just 56-seconds early in the period. Lindenwood attempted a comeback, beginning with an unassisted tally from
Dakota McAlpine at the 9:07 mark. The Lions made it 4-3 when they struck on another power play with 4:02 remaining. McAlpine and
Michaela Read set up
Marissa Delry for the score, but that would be as close as Lindenwood could get.
The Lions had a slight advantage in shots 33 to 32, and
Maia Busi made 28 saves on the 32 shots she faced, but took her first loss of the season in goal. Lindenwood drops to 5-1-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the WMCH.
After a weekend off, the Lions return to the ice for three games February 5-7. Two are scheduled against Maryville with a puck drop of 7:30 p.m. Friday evening and 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the Maryville Ice Center in Chesterfield, Missouri. A single contest against McKendree is set for Saturday at 12;30 p.m. at the McKendree Rec-Plex in Lebanon, Illinois.
