After not playing for 20 days, women's ACHA ice hockey battled to a tough 2-1 win over Arizona State Friday night in a neutral ice contest played at the Jordan Valley Ice Park in Springfield, Missouri.
After a reasonable start through the first period, the game took a turn towards the chippy side the rest of the way and ultimately featured 41 minutes of penalties. The Sun Devils took the first lead at the 8:36 mark and it appeared they would hold it through the first 20 minutes, but
Nikki Lillies had other ideas as she broke free for an unassisted effort with just eight seconds remaining.
The middle frame featured numerous power play opportunities for both teams, but neither could find the back of the net. The winning goal for the Lions came early in the third period. Matching minors were called late in the second, but ASU earned an additional five-minute slashing penalty. That time carried over and Lindenwood took advantage when
Kim Turcotte set up
Rylee Gee at 1:26. The Lions gave the Sun Devils another four power play chances, but kept the puck out of the net to secure the victory.
With the win, Lindenwood improved to 3-2-1 on the season. After a physical game Friday night, the Lions have a quick turnaround as they return to the ice at noon on Saturday to face Concordia University – Ann Arbor in another neutral ice contest at the Jordan Valley Ice Park.
