Women's ACHA ice hockey completed a sweep of Midland University with a 4-2 victory Sunday afternoon at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
After a scoreless opening period, the Warriors took the first lead at the 1:56 mark of the second. The Lions countered when
Nikki Lillies tied the game on a play set up by
Brookelyn Bell and
Hallie Fisher at 8:27. The contest remained knotted at 1-1 through the end of the period, setting up a third period that included four combined goals.
MacKenzie Drost sounded the horn for the first of those just 73-seconds into the final 20-minutes with help from Bell and
Risa Shatford. Midland answered at the 2:32 mark and the game was tied again at 2-2. Lindenwood finally took the lead for good with 4:47 left in regulation.
MacKenzie White split the pipes off a feed from
Dakota McAlpine. As the Warriors were scrambling to send the game to overtime,
Rylee Gee stole the puck and broke free for an unassisted effort with 28.8 seconds remaining.
The Lions outshot Midland 28-23, and
Maia Busi stopped 21 of the 23 shots she faced to earn the victory between the pipes. Another key to the win for Lindenwood was staying out of the penalty box. The Lions did not have a single penalty called against them while the Warriors were called for only two minors.
Lindenwood set up the series sweep with a 2-1 win in the final seconds of overtime Saturday night.
Like the game on Sunday, the opening period of the contest expired without any scoring. The Lions finally broke the seal on the net at 13:59 in the second on a shot from Lillies, assisted by Fisher and
Madison Teague. Midland wasted little time in tying things with a goal just under two minutes later. That's where the score remained through the rest of the second and all of the third period. It looked like even the extra overtime period might go scoreless as well until McAlpine ended it off a great pass from Drost with just 8.3 seconds on the clock.
The Warriors outshot the Lions 30-20, but
Emily McDonald stood tall between the pipes for Lindenwood, stopping 29 of the 30 pucks she faced.
With the two wins, the Lions improved to 6-1-1 in Women's Midwest Collegiate Hockey (WMCH) action and to 11-2-1 overall. After two idle weekends, Lindenwood, No. 4 in the ACHA Women's Division I ranking, returns to action for a tough road series against No. 2 Adrian College December 4-5. The Bulldogs are currently 9-1-1 in D1 play this season. Both games will be played at the Arrington Ice Arena in Adrian, Michigan.
