Women's ACHA ice hockey earned a 3-1 victory over Minot State in Women's Midwest College Hockey (WMCH) conference action Saturday evening at the Pepsis Ice Rink in Minot, North Dakota.
The Lions took an early 1-0 lead on the power play when
Lindsay Gillis and
Tessa O'Connor set up
Michaela Read at the 9:01 mark of the first period. Lindenwood made it 2-0 with an even strength effort from
Dakota McAlpine with 2:55 remaining, assisted by
Marissa Delry and
Kim Turcotte.
It looked like the Lions would take complete control of the game midway through the second when the Beavers were called for interference, but the tables were turned when Minot State scored short-handed after a steal and breakaway at 9:40 of the period. It remained a one-goal contest until
Kennedy Frank gave the Lions some breathing room off a feed from Read at 5:45 of the third for a 3-1 advantage, what proved to be the final of the game.
The Beavers outshot Lindenwood 21-16, but
Maia Busi stopped all but one of the 21 pucks she faced to earn the win in goal and help the Lions improve to 8-1-0 overall and to 5-1-0 in the WMCH.
Lindenwood and Minot State face off in the second game of the series Sunday afternoon, beginning at 1 p.m. at the Pepsis Ice Rink in Minot, North Dakota.
