After winning nine out of the first 10 games of the season overall and earning a series split in an earlier match-up with Liberty University on the road in late January, women's ACHA hockey fell to the Flames 8-1 on home ice Friday night at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
What started out as a closely contested game got out of hand late in the middle period. Liberty scored with 4:48 remaining in the first to take a 1-0 lead, then added a goal just 49-seconds into the second, but the Lions still only trailed 2-0 at that point. The final nine minutes of the frame proved costly, as the Flames played a physical game and added three more tallies to essentially put the contest out of reach.
Dakota McAlpine set up
Risa Shatford at 1:07 of the third to break the shutout and cut the deficit to 5-1, but that would prove to be the only scoring for Lindenwood. Liberty sounded the horn three more times in the final 14-minutes of regulation for the final margin.
The Flames controlled the puck, outshooting the Lions 58 to 24 on the night.
Maia Busi did what she could in goal, making 50 saves on 58 shots. With the loss, Lindenwood dropped to 9-2-0 overall and to 6-2-0 in Women's Midwest College Hockey (WMCH) action.
After the lone game against Liberty, the Lions will try to rebound against a different opponent, as they host Midland University February 20-21. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday night and at 2:40 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Both games can be seen live via the
Great Lakes Valley Conference Sports Network.
