Women's ACHA hockey picked up two wins to begin the weekend. The Lions defeated Maryville 15-1 Friday evening at the Maryville Hockey Center in Chesterfield, Missouri and then outlasted McKendree 2-1 Saturday afternoon in Women's Midwest College Hockey (WMCH) action at the McKendree Rec-Plex in Lebanon, Illinois.
Lindenwood scored three times against the Saints in the opening period. The first two goals came from
Kennedy Frank and
Hannah Jensen.
Kim Turcotte then sounded the horn on the power play with help from McKenzie Drost.
The Lions exploded for another seven goals in the second.
Michaela Read started the barrage with a man-advantage chance in the opening three minutes, assisted by
Dakota McAlpine.
Rayel Strayer followed on an even-strength effort with help from
Nikki Lillies and
Tessa O'Connor at the 7:29 mark.
Lindsay Gillis then scored two power play goals in a span of just 41 seconds.
Marissa Delry also went back-to-back, five-on-five and short-handed. Frank wrapped up the offense in the period with 19-seconds left to give Lindenwood a 10-0 lead.
Maryville broke the shutout just eight seconds into the third, but it was all Lions for the rest of regulation. Drost split the pipes 50-seconds later, then Delry completed her hat trick at 2:06. The final three scores for Lindenwood were all on the power play, with the first coming from O'Connor on a play set up by
MacKenzie White and Read at 4:12.
Brookelyn Bell hit the back of the net with 6:51 remaining, and the final tally came off the blade of
Risa Shatford with 2:57 left on the clock.
The Lions outshot the Saints 40 to 20 and
Maia Busi stopped 19 of the 20 pucks she faced to earn the victory in goal. Delry and Gillis each earned their 100th career point in the contest.
After a huge offensive output on Friday, it was a much more defensive effort against the Bearcats on Saturday. Lindenwood took an early 1-0 lead when freshman
Klaire Sengheiser scored her first career collegiate goal, assisted by Delry and Frank at 6:56 of the opening frame. Shatford doubled the advantage with an unassisted blast with 1:41 remaining in the period. The score remained 2-0 Lions through the second period and into the third until McKendree netted a shot at 4:10 to make it 2-1, but the Lions defense stiffened and held the Bearcats scoreless for the rest of regulation.
Lindenwood outshot the Bearcats 42 to 19, and
Emily McDonald made 18 saves on 19 shots to earn the win in goal. With the two victories, the Lions improved to 7-1-0 overall and to 4-1-0 in the WMCH.
Lindenwood finishes a three-game weekend with another tilt against Maryville Sunday afternoon. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at the Maryville Hockey Center in Chesterfield, Missouri.
