Two first period goals propelled the women's ACHA hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Adrian College in the second round of pool play at the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Women's Division I National Championship Friday afternoon at Maysa Arena in Minot, North Dakota.
The Lions, the No. 2 seed in the pool, scored first against the No. 3 seeded Bulldogs when
Marissa Delry sounded the horn off a feed from
Dakota McAlpine at the 1:32 mark. Later in the period, Lindenwood had a chance to double its lead after Adrian took a tripping penalty, but instead, the Bulldogs tied the game on a short-handed effort with 2:08 remaining. The Lions continued to work on the power play and it paid off with a
Lindsay Gillis goal assisted by
Tessa O'Connor just 25-seconds later. That proved to be the game-winning score as neither team found the back of the net the rest of the game.
Adrian outshot Lindenwood 26 to 20 and
Emily McDonald stopped 25 of the 26 shots on goal that she faced to earn the victory for the Lions, who improved to 13-8-0 overall. They wrap up pool play on Saturday against No. 4 seed Midland University. The puck drops at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Maysa Arena in Minot, North Dakota.
