A late power play goal from Mackenzie Drost lifted women's ACHA ice hockey to a 3-2 victory over Miami (Ohio) in the first game of the season Friday night at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
Risa Shatford (No.12) and Dakota
McAlpine Earned Three Points Each
Risa Shatford and
Dakota McAlpine assisted on the play that came with just 3:16 remaining in regulation, and just 17 seconds after a Redhawks tripping penalty gave the Lions the man advantage.
Lindenwood scored its first goal on the power play as well, with only 6.4 seconds on the clock in the first period.
Kennedy Frank found the back of the net with McAlpine and Shatford earning the helpers.
The Lions maintained a 1-0 lead through the entire second frame, but Miami tied the game on an even strength shot at the 2:38 mark of the third. Lindenwood responded to retake the lead about four minutes later with McAlpine and Shatford involved in the play once again. Freshman
Rylee Gee and McAlpine combined to find the blade of Shatford for the goal at 6:25 to give the Lions a 2-1 advantage, but it only took the Redhawks six minutes to equalize things with 7:42 left in the third. That set up the late power play heroics and the 3-2 win.
McAlpine and Shatford each totaled three points in the game to lead Lindenwood on offense while
Emily McDonald stopped 33 of 35 shots to earn the victory in goal with Miami outshooting the Lions 35-28.
The two teams face off against each other again Saturday night beginning at 10 p.m. at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
