Men's rugby earned a 66-0 shutout over Iowa Central Community College Friday afternoon at the Lindenwood Track Complex in St. Charles, Missouri.
Nick Hardrict, II and
Matteo Peignon each scored three of the 10 tries for the Lions in their first home match of the season.
How it Happened:
Lindenwood quickly took an early 5-0 lead when
Alejandro Martinez Tapia blocked a Tritons kick and scooped and scored from twenty meters after just four minutes of play.
In the 10
th minute, Hardrict, II dashed into the zone for his first try of the game and with the Peignon conversion, Lindenwood went ahead 12-0. Peignon added to the scoring when a Lions scrum pushed the opposition across the try line. He picked the ball off the back and stepped into the zone for a 19-0 advantage after the conversion. Another try each from Hardrict, II and Peignon, and the ensuing conversions gave Lindenwood a 33-0 lead at the break.
At the very beginning of the second half, Peignon showcased his running ability and cut through the Iowa Central defense to score in the corner. After an
Eduan van Heerden try, 2022 All-American
Tyren Al-Jiboori also found the corner of the try zone. After Peignon booted the conversions, it was 52-0 in favor of the Lions.
At the 62-minute mark,
Kayleb O'Donoghue scored off the back of a maul after a successful Lindenwood lineout.
William Groves was given an opportunity for the conversion and he was successful, giving Lindenwood a 59-0 advantage.
With what proved to be the final try of the game for the Lions, Hardrict, II demonstrated what made him a USA Sevens All-American. He made numerous defenders miss and then out-raced the Triton defense. Another Groves conversion gave Lindenwood its final margin at 66-0.
