Men's rugby opened the month of October with a 57-7 win against Southern Illinois (SIU) Saturday afternoon in Carbondale, Illinois. The Lions scored nine tries in the match and connected on six conversions.
How it Happened:
Lindenwood started quickly by poaching the ball from the runner at midfield. After a quick transition that put
David Cathcart all alone out wide, he ended up with the ball after a few passes across the backline and outpaced the defense to score the first try of the day.
Lochlan Charley booted the conversion to put the Lions ahead 7-0.
Moments later, Lindenwood secured a lineout 10-meters from the try line after Charley delivered a long 50/22 kick to set up the throw-in. Two quick phases later,
Mathis Corbel powered over the line for a 14-0 advantage with another Charley conversion.
After a physical try by
Caden Howe, the Salukis earned another lineout deep in SIU territory, but this time, the Lions took a mauling option to cross the try line.
Dylin Mulder proved to be patient as the maul methodically drove the defense to its breaking point giving Lindenwood a 26-0 lead.
After another attacking try from
Ike Wrigley, the Lions defense flexed its muscles and helped secure a try themselves. The Lindenwood defense forced a few negative carries and pressured the Salukis attack, creating an errant pass.
Leo Delannoy intercepted it and raced 50-meters for the score to increase the margin to 38-0.
Just before halftime, Cathcart scored again, this time from a well-executed chip kick, and the Lions took a 43-0 lead to the break.
In the early stages of the second half, Lindenwood forced a turnover and passed the ball to Howe. He then broke numerous tackles and galloped 30-meters to score his second try of the match and increase the Lions lead to 50 with another Charley conversion.
Southern Illinois finally broke the shutout after a Lindenwood error. A forward pass deep in Lions territory gave SIU a scrum just 10-meters from the try line. A few phases later, the Salukis were at the goal line. A quick pick allowed a SIU player dive over for the score. The ensuing conversion made it 50-7 in favor of the Lindenwood.
With time winding down,
Leo Delannoy made a great play by gathering a chip kick and connecting on a no look offload pass to Cathcart near the sideline. Cathcart finished the drive and
Ike Wrigley connected on the conversion to end the match at 57-7.
