Women's Ice Hockey-ACHA

Big Second Period Lifts Lions to 7-2 Win

A four-goal outburst in the second period helped lead women's ACHA hockey to a 7-2 win over McKendree University Sunday afternoon at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri. All three lines scored in the contest and Saskia Fuchs, Jessica Wither, and Annika Asplundh all scored their first ACHA career goals.

Fuchs lit the lamp first for the Lions late in the opening frame when Kim Turcotte and Ardyn Hawryshko set up the freshman for a shot at 18:33.

The offensive barrage started after a Bearcats holding penalty early in the second. It only took 14-seconds for Lindenwood to capitalize on the power play when Madison Teague split the pipes off a pass from Loki Antonio at 4:47 to make it 2-0 Lions. Lindenwood increased the advantage with 7:45 remaining in the period on a play from several familiar players. Antonio and Fuchs combined to put the puck on the blade of Hawryshko, and she put it in the back of the net to make it 3-0. Just 51-seconds later, Haylee Iverson scored off a feed from Kennedy Frank. The final goal of the period came with 41-second remaining when Antonio set up Hawryshko and the Lions carried a 5-0 lead into the third.

McKendree broke the shutout 31-seconds into the final period, and the Bearcats made it 5-2 with 16:18 left in regulation, but Lindenwood scored the final two goals to seal the victory. Risa Shatford assisted Wither on the power play for a score at 8:39 and Asplundh netted the puck unassisted with 3:47 remaining.

The Bearcats outshot the Lions 32-29, but Emily McDonald stopped 30 of the 32 pucks she faced to earn the victory in goal for Lindenwood, improving the team record for the season to 1-1.

The Lions will be on the road for their next seven games, beginning with a two-game series against Indiana Tech October 7-8. The puck drops at 4:30 p.m. Friday afternoon and at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at SpeedOne Parkview Arena in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
