Women's ACHA ice hockey topped Maryville University 4-2 in a make-up game in Women's Midwest Collegiate Hockey (WMCH) action Thursday afternoon at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
What started as more of a defensive battle through the first two periods switched gears in the final 20-minutes with a flurry of offense that decided the outcome.
The Saints did score the first goal of the contest at the 7:38 mark of the first and held a 1-0 lead into the early moments of the second when the Lions tied the game with a power play goal.
Kennedy Frank and
Risa Shatford set up
MacKenzie Drost for the scoring shot at 2:10.
The contest remained knotted at 1-1 through the rest of the period, but Lindenwood drew another penalty early in the third and capitalized. Frank sounded the horn at 2:23 on the play which was set up by Shatford and
Ardyn Hawryshko, but Maryville answered just 24-seconds later on an even-strength effort. That set up the game-winning moment for the Lions about 10-minutes later. It came with two scores in a span of just 13-seconds on the same shift of offensive players.
Kiara Stewart split the pipes first with help from Drost and
Dakota McAlpine with 7:45 remaining in regulation, then Hawryshko and Stewart combined to put the puck on the blade of McAlpine who found the back of the net with 7:32 on the clock. That gave Lindenwood a 4-2 advantage, which was enough for the victory.
The Lions outshot the Saints 53 to 21 and
Maia Busi stopped 19 of the 21 shots she faced to earn the win in goal for Lindenwood.
With the win, the Lions improved to 8-2-2 in the WMCH and to 14-2-2 overall. A busy weekend of hockey continues for Lindenwood with a trip to Oxford, Ohio to face Miami University (Ohio) February 11-12. The puck drops at 10 p.m. Friday night and at 9:10 p.m. Saturday night at the Goggin Ice Center.
