The Lindenwood softball team earned a berth to the 2022 GLVC Championship Tournament, the league announced on Monday afternoon. The Lions, who finished 21-7 in GLVC action this spring, shared third place with Drury following the regular season. Due to tiebreaker rules, Lindenwood has been named the 4-seed in the upcoming eight-team event, which will be held at the EastSide Centre in East Peoria, Ill., from May 5-8.
This marks the Lions' second straight appearance in the GLVC postseason tournament, as the team earned the 6-seed following the 2021 regular season.
The Lions recorded their best regular season in program history during the athletic department's NCAA DII era, winning 34 of the team's 44 contests thus far. As a result of its success, Lindenwood has been ranked fifth in each of the first two Midwest Regional polls, sitting behind only three GLVC members and one institution from the GLIAC. The final regional poll will be released on Wednesday, May 4, with the official field announced on Monday, May 9.
No. 16 Southern Indiana claimed the tournament's top seed, while No. 2 UIndy finished second. The Lions will battle fifth-seeded Missouri-St. Louis on Thursday, May 5, in the tournament's first game at 10 a.m. The winner will advance to play either Southern Indiana or eighth-seeded Maryville.
The Lions swept UMSL in the pair's GLVC twin bill earlier this season, earning comeback victories in each game conducted at UMSL Softball Field in St. Louis.
