The Lion Line dance team added to its storied history by winning the Open Hip Hop title at the 2023 UCA/UDA College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championships January 14-15 in
Orlando, Florida.
The Hip Hop squad led the semifinal round of performances with an event score of 90.6087, narrowly leading Northwest Community College by just over half a point. As one of eight teams to advance to the finals, the Lady Lions had another strong performance and earned an event score of 89.3333. NWCC was up to the task as well, but settled for second place after coming up about a half point short of Lindenwood. West Chester University finished third, followed by Stockton University in fourth.
The Lion Line Open Jazz squad also advanced out of the semifinals, but the road to a potential title was challenging. With an event score of 84.4783, the Lady Lions sat in ninth place, over eight points behind semifinal leader Minnesota – Duluth. As one of 14 squads to advance to the finals, the Open Jazz squad improved its performance, earning an event score of 86.4348, but it was only enough to move up to eighth place. Minnesota – Duluth captured the title, followed by Minnesota State – Mankato in second, St. Cloud State University in third, and Orange Coast College in fourth.
Lion Line last won a national championship at the 2021 event when the Lady Lions claimed both the Open Hip Hop and Open Jazz titles. The 2023 Open Hip Hop crown this year became the 10
th overall in program history. Lion Line previously captured Open Hip Hop titles in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, and 2021; and won Open Jazz crowns in 2015, 2017, and 2021.
