The Lions remained undefeated in the Midwest Rugby Conference (MRC) with a 52-7 victory over Adrian College Friday night at Docking Stadium in Adrian, Michigan. Eight players scored tries for Lindenwood and
Brendan Mason added 10 points with his kicks.
How it Happened:
The Lions scored first 10 minutes into the match when
Cole Scharffenorth cut back against the Bulldogs defense 10 meters from the try line and accelerated through a gap. Mason slotted the conversion and Lindenwood led 7-0.
The Lions scored again just six minutes later by successfully executing a five-meter lineout.
Asher Webb was sent into the zone with a charging maul, and with another Mason conversion, Lindenwood extended the advantage to 14-0.
The Lions added another seven points at the 30-minute mark. The forwards continued to show their dominance in the scrum when they drove the opposition backwards from five meters.
Duncan Krige finished off the try by falling on the ball as the scrum crossed into the zone.
With about six minutes remaining in the first half, Adrian broke the shutout. The Bulldogs caught Lindenwood by surprise with a quick ball and overlap on the weak side. The Adrian attacker sidestepped the defense inside and scored on the edge. The ensuing conversion was good despite an extremely difficult angle and the Bulldogs has cut the deficit to 21-7.
With Adrian eyeing a possible comeback, the Lions quickly dashed those hopes. Immediately after the kickoff, an errant Bulldogs pass put the ball on the turf.
Declan Ries quickly scooped it up and passed to
Bautista Nasta who's rapid pace with the ball in hand put him over for the try and a 26-7 lead.
With one play remaining in the half, Lindenwood earned a lineout five-meters away. A great throw from
Christopher Wallace started the lineout well and a powerful maul put the forward pack over the line with
Calvin Ihrig getting the score. Mason was good on the conversion and the Lions led 33-7 at the break.
Lindenwood struck quickly in the second half. The Lions had a penalty advantage when Bryon Forward sent a cross-field kick over the defense.
Kobe Millar caught the ball and passed to
Brendan Mason who quickly hit Nasta. He accelerated down the sideline 60-meters for the score to make it 38-7.
After a
Le'Donn Mathis try, Ries scored the final points of the match. Forword executed a grubber kick that put Lindenwood just two meters away. A few phases later, Ries was isolated in the clear out wide and a pass gave him a lane for the score. Forword converted, and it was 52-7.
