Men's Hockey Plays to Wild 7-7 Tie on Friday Night

The Lindenwood men's hockey team (7-21-1) played to a crazy 7-7 tie with the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves (7-19-1) on Friday night from Anchorage, Alaska.

GAME OVERVIEW
In an open first period on the offensive end, that saw a combined 21 shots on goal between the two teams, Alaska Anchorage grabbed an early 1-0 lead at the 16:50 mark of the opening frame. The Seawolves added another score just before the halfway point, taking a 2-0 lead. Lindenwood cut into the lead at the 6:18 mark as Hunter Johannes put his smooth skating and shot on display, making the score 2-1. He was assisted by Andy Willis and Cade DeStefani. After the goal, the Lions penalty kill was strong, going a perfect 2-2 in the period, but Lindenwood trailed by one after 20 minutes.

Offense continued to dominate the middle frame as each team scored four apiece. After the Seawolves scored the first two of the frame early, Lindenwood responded with the next two. First, Andy Willis and Johannes played catch with Willis getting the tally making it 4-3. Shortly after, a shot from Zach Aughe found its way through, bringing the score to 4-3.

Anchorage responded with two more goals making it 6-3, but Lindenwood had an answer as well. Scoring two goals in less than four minutes of play. Mitch Allard won a faceoff back to Aiden Yakimchuk who handed it to Coltan Wilkie. Wilkie then found Allard back door for the easy tap in, making it 6-4. Less than two minutes later, Jack Anderson sent a long stretch pass up to Kyle Jeffers who fired one home, moving the score to 6-5. Adam Conquest also picked up a helper on the goal. The Lions would trail by one after 40 minutes.

The final frame struggled to get much flow due to penalties, but the Lions kill was great, killing all five opportunities against in the final frame. Trent Burnham was strong in the third, stopping 16 shots which allowed Lindenwood to stay in the game. With the Lions still trailing 6-5, and under three minutes to go, Willis tied the game, assisted by Johannes and Wilkie. Less than 30 seconds later, however, UAA would regain the lead going up 7-6. Lindenwood would make one final push with Burnham pulled and the Lions would capitalize. Kyle Jeffers found the back of the net, assisted by Johannes and Willis with 30 seconds remaining, knotting the game 7-7. The game would need overtime.

In the extra session, both goalies made some key saves, denying breakaway attempts, meaning the game would end in a tie. The Seawolves won the shootout, 3-2.
