Women's ACHA ice hockey earned a 7-0 shutout win against Michigan State Saturday night sandwiched in between a 3-3 tie against the University of Massachusetts Friday afternoon and a 5-5 tie against Arizona State Monday morning at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
In a contest that wrapped up a stretch of three games in four days, the Lions came back from a 3-1 deficit to take a 5-4 lead against the Sun Devils midway through the third period, but ASU forced overtime and neither team was able to get the game-winner in the extra five minutes.
Special teams played a key role as seven of the 10 goals scored came on the power play. Arizona State netted the first two in the opening frame to take a 2-0 lead, but
Loki Antonio put Lindenwood on the board with a man-advantage effort of her own early in the second, assisted by Hilary Pearce and
Madison Teague. The Sun Devils made it 3-1 with a rare even-strength goal at 18:28, but Antonio answered just 15-seconds later on a play set up by Pearce and
Ardyn Hawryshko and it was 3-2 heading to the final period.
The Lions completed their comeback early in the third on an
Ava Bilton power play goal at 2:07 with help from Hawryshko and Pearce at 2:07, and they took their first lead at 4-3 when Pearce sounded the horn on the man-advantage assisted by Hawryshko and Antonio at 3:57, but ASU tied the contest at 8:29 after a checking penalty on Lindenwood. Pearce scored her second of the game on a play set up by Teague and Antonio at 12:22 only to be matched by a Sun Devils power play goal at 14:47. Neither team scored again through the rest of regulation and overtime.
Lindenwood outshot Arizona State 47-42 and
Jordan Tung stopped 37 of the 42 shots she faced to earn the victory in goal as the Lions went 3/5 on the power play. The Sun Devils scored four times on five power play chances.
The lone win of the weekend came against the Spartans on Saturday. Lions goaltender
Evi Allerding was one of the Stars of the Game with 48 saves on 48 shots. Six different Lindenwood players scored, led by
Katelynn Weeks with a pair of goals, but
Katelynn Weeks sounded the horn first at 3:32 of the first, assisted by
Jessica Wither and Hawryshko. After a cross-checking penalty on Michigan State,
Devyn Doti earned her first of the season on the power play, assisted by
Kailey Keller and Teague at 19:38.
The Lions added two more in the second with Antonio and Teague setting up Hawryshko, and then
Saskia Fuchs and
Ava Bilton creating for Antonio's seventh of the season at the 10-minute mark.
Weeks scored her second just 59-seconds into the third on a play set up by Kenzie Cameron and
Lauren Miller to make it 5-0 and it looked like that might wrap up the offense, but Lindenwood added two more to the ledger in the final three minutes. Teague hit the back of the net on the power play with help from Antonio and Hawryshko at 17:00, then Marina Evert scored her first of the season at 18:09, assisted by
Brynn Carter and Teague at 18:09.
The Lions outshot the Spartans 48-45 and 2/5 on the power play while holding Michigan State scoreless on seven chances.
In the opening contest of the weekend, Lindenwood fell behind the Minutemen 3-0, but came back with three goals in the third to force overtime. Carter, Hawryshko, and Antonio accounted for the scoring with Pearce earning two assists. The Lions outshot UMass 34-31 with Tung stopping 28 of the 31 shots she faced.
With the win and two ties, Lindenwood improved to 4-8-3 on the season. The Lions return to Women's Midwest College Hockey action January 19-20 against Maryville. Lindenwood enters the weekend with a 1-5 mark in conference play, the lone win coming against the Saints. The puck drops at 2 p.m. Friday afternoon and at 1:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon at the Maryville Ice Center across town in the Chesterfield Valley.
