With a 3-2 victory on Friday and a 6-1 loss on Saturday, women's ACHA ice hockey split a two-game series with Maryville in the Women's Midwest Collegiate Hockey (WMCH) conference January 19-20 at the Maryville Ice Center in Chesterfield, Missouri.
In the opener, the Lions fell behind by a couple goals in the opening period, but mounted a comeback that culminated late in the third.
Hilary Pierce scored first for Lindenwood off a nice pass from
Loki Antonio at 8:14 of the second. Pierce struck again just 30-seconds into the final period on a play set up by
Ardyn Hawryshko and
Madison Teague. With the score tied 2-2, both teams traded offensive chances, but it was the Lions that earned the 3-2 advantage when
Katelynn Weeks sounded the horn on a play set up by
Ava Bilton and
Jessica Wither at 15:05.
Now trailing, the Saints pulled their goalie with just under two-minutes remaining in regulation, and they had a brief six-on-four opportunity when Weeks was called for roughing with 10-seconds remaining, but Lindenwood secured the win, despite being outshot 39-30.
Evi Allerding stopped 37 of the 39 shots she faced to pick up the victory in goal. The Lions went 0/2 on the power play, but held Maryville scoreless on three man-advantage chances.
The game on Saturday started the same way with Lindenwood falling behind 2-0 in the first period, but the Saints were able to pile on in the second, thanks to penalties that led to a pair of power play goals in the second. The Lions were called for interference late in the opening frame and Maryville scored 17-seconds into the second on the carryover time. A slashing call at 13:01 led to the second special teams goal 40-seconds later and Lindenwood trailed 4-0.
Less than a minute later, the Saints were called for slashing and Bilton fed Hawryshko for the lone Lions goal at 15:04 to make it 4-1 on the power play. Maryville added two even-strength goals in the third for the final margin.
The Saints outshot Lindenwood 40-25 and
Jordan Tung stopped 34 of the 40 pucks she faced in a losing effort for the Lions, who went 1/4 on the power play, but yielded two scores on four man-advantage chances.
With the split, Lindenwood is now 5-9-3 overall and 2-6 in the WMCH. The Lions host three individual games in conference January 25-27. They will face the University of Jamestown on Thursday at 9:30 p.m., Liberty University on Friday at 9:40 p.m., and Minot State University at 8:50 p.m. on Saturday with all three games taking place at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
