Men’s Bowling Knocked out of ITC in Third Round

The title chase for men's bowling came to an end in the third round with a 4-2 loss to No. 3 seed Indiana Tech at the Intercollegiate Team Championships (ITC) on Friday at Kingpin Lanes in Louisville, Kentucky.

The Lions earned the No. 7 seed after 24 games of baker qualifying on Thursday. They started well with an opening set of 870 that included a 266 game. From there, it was a bit of a roller coaster as Lindenwood alternated between shooting sets in the 700's with sets in the 800's the rest of the way, posting 771, 817, 777, 895 including a high of 269, and 786 to total 4916 (204.83 average).

After a short break for lunch, the Lions returned to the lanes on a fresh oil pattern for best-of-seven baker match play. As the No. 7 seed, they faced No. 10 seed Marian (Ind.) and it proved to be quite a tussle. After Lindenwood took a 1-0 lead with a 201-191 victory, the Knights countered with three wins in a row 232-175, 224-183, and 218-161.
With their backs against the wall, the Lions started game five well with five straight marks, but an open in the sixth frame stalled their momentum. Despite that, Lindenwood was still in good position going into the final frame, needing just a spare to force Marian to double for a win, but a missed 10-pin opened the door. The Knights just needed to fill 19 to clinch the match, but after striking on the first ball, they left a six-count "bucket." Needing to get three of the four remaining pins, they only dropped two, ending the game in a 181-181 tie.

Still alive, but trailing 3.5-1.5, the Lions found some renewed energy and started game six with nine strikes in a row, however Marian went on a roll as well. In the end, Lindenwood stayed alive with a 276-251 win, and then followed with another victory 200-179 to tie the match 3.5-3.5, forcing a deciding game eight. The Lions started with a double to take an early advantage, but then two single-pin misses changed the outlook and Lindenwood was fighting from behind. Needing a double in the later frames to catch the Knights, two good shots went begging, leaving single pins. Marian finished first with a double in the 10th to shut out the Lions and take the match with a 201-193 win.

With the loss, Lindenwood was done for the day, but returned early Friday morning to face No. 15 seed McKendree in an elimination match. The Bearcats were swept by Lawrence Tech the previous day and it looked like they may face that same fate. Game one was a close contest throughout, but the Lions finished with a flurry to take it 200-192. Lindenwood erupted in game two with another string of nine strikes in a row, eventually posting a 275-213 victory.

Both teams returned to earth the following contest, but the Lions grinded to a 184-179 win to build a 3-0 advantage in the match. On the brink of elimination, McKendree rallied to win the next two games, aided by several Lindenwood splits and open frames, but Lindenwood put together a solid game six and ran away from the Bearcats 234-182 for a 4-2 match victory.

With only a short break, the Lions faced No. 3 seed Indiana Tech in another elimination battle. After winning their opening match 4-1 against No. 14 seed Grand Canyon on Thursday, the Warriors had been upset by No. 11 Wisconsin – Whitewater. Indiana Tech was bowling its first match of the day, but it didn't show as they came out firing and quickly took a 2-0 lead 258-212 and 255-208. Lindenwood remained steady though, and stemmed the tide temporarily with a 213-210 victory in game three. The Lions were in position to strike out in the 10th frame to tie the match, but left an open frame, giving Indiana Tech a 233-202 win and a 3-1 advantage overall.

With no margin of error left, Lindenwood used a key four-bagger in the middle of game five to stay alive with a 204-188 victory and the Lions were in position to steal game six to tie the match, but once again, a good shot didn't carry and Lindenwood came up short by a final of 211-200. With a 1-2 match record, the Lions finished in the ninth through 12th position at the 2024 ITC. They entered the event as the 17th ranked team in the country according to the final National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association (NCBCA) poll of the season.

The men's ITC roster included: Juan Pablo Aguirre, Mike Anderson, Nathan Bassford, Luke Batchelor, Emmanual McPherson, Graham Mortimore, Javier Muniz Vega, and Blake Reiger, with alternates Jared Felipa and Zach Wentzel.
