Men's Ice Hockey Defeats Simon Fraser 5-1

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, MO. – On Friday night, men's ice hockey took on British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL) contender, Simon Fraser. The Lions would notch a 5-1 victory in game one of the exhibition series against the Red Leafs, scoring four straight goals to end the contest.

GAME OVERVIEW
With 6:40 left in the first period, Kristof Papp in the low slot would deflect a Noah Houle pass from the point to put the Lions up 1-0. David Gagnon would also tally an assist on Papp's power-play goal. The period would end 1-0, in Lindenwood's favor. In the period, Lindenwood would find eight shots on net. Owen Bartoszkiewicz would make five stops in between the pipes for the Lions.
13 seconds into the second period, Simon Fraser would tie the game up on a wrist shot past Bartoszkiewicz. The tie would be short-lived, with Patrick Schmiedlin deflecting a Ty Hipkin shot past the Red Leaf's netminder, to regain the one-goal lead, fresh off the penalty kill. Ethan Zielke would also be credited with an assist on the Schmiedlin goal. With 17:31 left to go in the period, Lindenwood would lead 2-1. 12:36 later, Patrick Schmedilin would notch his second goal of the game off a Red Leaf turnover, roofing a shot past the Red Leaf's netminder's glove side, to put the Lions up 3-1. The Lions would end the period leading 3-1. In the frame, Bartoszkiewicz stopped 11 shots. Offensively, the Lions put 12 shots on net in the frame.

10:13 into the third period, Drew Kuzma claps a shot past the Red Leaf's netminder to tally Lindenwood's fourth goal on the night. Kuzma's goal would be assisted by Jake Southgate. Less than a minute later with 9:47 left to go in the frame, Jaeden Mercier would collect a rebound and roof a shot past the netminder's glove side, to extend the Lion's lead to four. Mercier's power-play goal would be assisted by David Gagnon and Noah Houle. At the end of the period, Lindenwood had nine shots on target. Bartoszkiewicz would make a quiet ten saves in the frame.
At the end of the contest, Lindenwood totaled 31 shots on goal. Bartoszkiewicz stopped 26 of 27 shots, for a save percentage of .963.
