MARYLAND HEIGHTS, MO. - The Lindenwood Women's Hockey team (1-7-0, 0-0-0 AHA) fell in the series finale with the Merrimack College Warriors on Saturday afternoon by a score of 3-1.
The Warriors scored all three of their goals in the first period, scoring the first goal of the game 3:13 into the opening frame off a redirection in front of the net. Two minutes later, Merrimack scored on the power play to go up 2-0 and added a third goal late in the first period to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Lions got on the board late in the second period on
Hannah Dods's first goal of the season.
Ellie Muscedere sent the puck along the boards in the Lion's defensive zone to
Lucie Quarto. Quarto fired a pass down the ice to Dods who had a breakaway from the blue line and sent a wrist shot to the right post to beat the Warrior goalie cutting the Merrimack lead to 3-1.
In the third period, the Lions had a bunch of great chances to score but the Merrimack goaltender made several big saves to keep the Lions off the scoreboard. The Lions pulled their goalie with four minutes remaining in the final period to put the pressure on the Warrior defense. Lindenwood recorded eight shots on goal with the extra attacker, but was unable to score.
Lindenwood had 44 shots on goal in the contest, with seven coming off the stick of
Tatiana Blichova and six from
Josey Dunne-Weeks.
Lexington Secreto played in the last two periods, making 11 saves in 36:18 of ice time as the Lions limited the Warriors to 20 shots on goal in the game, but Merrimack made up for it as they had 25 blocked shots on defense.
Lindenwood will have a week off before traveling to Penn State on October 24 and 25th to open their AHA conference schedule. Puck drop on October 24 is set for 1 p.m. CT.
