MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. - The Lindenwood Women's Hockey team went the distance in Friday afternoon's matchup with Robert Morris, ending the game with a point in the AHA standings after falling in a shootout 2-0. The Lions had eight power plays in the game, but only converted on one of them and ended the contest with 41 shots on goal compared to 38 for Robert Morris.
Lindenwood wasted no time getting on the board in the first period as
Zsofia Pazmandi scored 11 seconds into the game to instantly give the Lions a 1-0 lead. Off the opening faceoff,
Tatiana Blichova retrieved the puck in the Colonials defensive zone along the left side boards. Blichova sent a centering pass to Pazmandi in the middle of the zone who scored on a wrist shot that went over the left shoulder of the Robert Morris goaltender. Immediately following the goal, the Lions went on the power play but were unable to extend the lead keeping the score at 1-0. Over the last five minutes of the opening period, Lindenwood killed off two Robert Morris power plays and took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
Lexington Secreto made 12 saves in the first 20 minutes of play, recording 31 consecutive saves dating back to last Saturday at Delaware. Pazmandi finished the first period with a team-leading three shots on goal.
In the second period, the Colonials struck twice in the early and middle stages of the period to grab a 2-1 lead. Robert Morris outshot the Lions 16-14 in the middle frame and took the lead into the second intermission as the Lions were unable to convert on their third and fourth power plays of the game. Six of Lindenwood's 14 shots in the period were during the power play opportunities, but the Colonials goaltender kept the Lions off the scoreboard recording 14 saves in the second period to keep Robert Morris in front by a score of 2-1 after 40 minutes of play.
Two minutes into the third period, Lindenwood headed back to the power play with an opportunity to even the score at two a piece. During the five-on-four, Robert Morris committed another penalty to give the Lions a five-on three. After a shot by
Silje Gundersen went wide during the five-on-three,
Tatiana Blichova gathered the puck behind the Robert Morris net and sent a pass up to
Josey Dunne-Weeks. Dunne-Weeks sent a pass over to Gundersen, who faked a shot to move the defenders to one side of the ice and sent it back to Dunne-Weeks. Dunne-Weeks fired a wrist shot on the pass back from Gundersen that went over the left shoulder of the Colonial goaltender to tie the game at two. Both teams had opportunities throughout the third period to take the lead, but neither team would score for the remainder of the period as the game headed to Overtime.
In the Overtime period,
Lexington Secreto made two huge saves early on to keep the game tied at two. Robert Morris was able to send a pass across the ice where Forward Morgan Giannone was all alone. Giannone sent a shot across her body towards the bottom left corner of the net, but Secreto slid to her left side and was able to get a pad on it to deny Robert Morris on the scoring chance. The Lions headed back to the power play midway through Overtime, but couldn't score on their eighth power play of the afternoon to send Lindenwood to their first shootout of the season. After both teams missed on their first attempt during the shootout, the Colonials scored on their second and third attempts to take the shootout victory. Despite the shootout loss, Secreto recorded 36 saves in the contest while
Rhaea Flint,
Zsofia Pazmandi, and
Hannah Dods all had six shots on goal to lead the Lions offensively.
Lindenwood will be back in action tomorrow afternoon for the series finale with Robert Morris. Puck drop is set for 12 p.m.
