The Lindenwood lacrosse team (9-1, 2-0 ASUN) picked up a thrilling overtime win, defeating Coastal Carolina in overtime (4-7, 0-2 ASUN) by a score of 16-15 on Friday afternoon from Hunter Stadium.
GAME OVERVIEW
Lindenwood got on the board first with a goal from
Alissa DiGiacinto assisted by
Isabella Rulapaugh. The Chants responded with the next four goals, taking a 4-1 lead with 8:06 to go in the opening frame.
Luci Selander stopped the run finding the back of the net, making the score 4-2 with just over seven minutes to go in the quarter. DiGiacinto cut the deficit to 4-3 at the 4:14 mark, and Selander tied the game less than a minute later off a feed from
Sarah Jardine.
Coastal Carolina grabbed the lead again 5-4 a few minutes later, but the Lions scored the final two goals of the frame, coming from DiGiacinto and
Ryleigh Cavanaugh, putting Lindenwood ahead 6-5 after one.
In a low scoring second quarter, the Chants netted the first three goals, taking an 8-6 lead. The Lions responded with two late tallies, one coming from Selander and the other from
Reese Krieger with just nine seconds to go, tying the score 8-8 at the break.
The third quarter was a back-and forth one, as Coastal scored first to open the frame, but DiGiacinto answered, tying the game, 9-9 with 9:05 remaining. DiGiacinto scored again less than a minute later, putting the Lions ahead 10-9. The two teams managed to trade goals throughout the quarter, but Rulapaugh found the back of the net as time expired, putting Lindenwood up 12-11 after three.
Selander gave the Lions some cushion with a score a minute into the fourth. Coastal Carolina, netted the next two, tying the game at 13 with just over seven minutes to go.
Reese Krieger put the Lions back in front 14-13, but the Chants answered with the next two, grabbing a 15-14.
Coastal held the lead with less than two minutes to go.
Aislinn Sweeney came up with some big saves to keep the deficit at one. With under a minute to go, Cavanaugh knotted the game at 15 off a feed from Rulapaugh. Coastal Carolina had a shot to win it with time ticking down, but Sweeney made the stop as the game headed to overtime.
In the extra session, Selander won a contested draw control and DiGiacinto send everyone home with her sixth goal of the day, lifting Lindenwood to a 16-15 overtime win.
