ST. CHARLES, MO. - Lindenwood Women's Rugby bounced back from last Saturday's loss to Harvard in a big way as they took down the Navy Midshipmen by a final score of 64-17 on Saturday morning behind a big offensive performance from several Lions.
The Lions came out with a lot of energy early on as they scored three tries within the first 10 minutes of the match.
Madison Jersey scored two tries, while
He'Lena Dou'Ble added another try to put Lindenwood in front 17-0 early in the first half.
Irie Farley made her first conversion of the match and finished 1/4 on conversions in the contest.
Later in the first half, Navy had a line-out in the 28th minute. On the throw, the Mids would send it too high and
Ava Reuter would intercept the pass and take it the distance for the Lions' fourth try of the half to extend the lead to 22-0. Four minutes later,
Brianna Beath scored a try and Jersey added two points on the conversion to take a commanding 29-0 lead with 12 minutes left to go in the opening half. The Lions added on to their lead once again in the 32nd minute as
Amy Brice scored a try. Jersey connected on her second conversion of the match to make the score 36-0.
Navy would get on the scoreboard on the ensuing kickoff as the Mids intercepted a pass and took it the distance to get their first try of the match at the 33rd minute. The Lions dominated in the first half, and took a 36-5 lead into the locker room.
Navy came out of the locker room and scored the first try of the second half at the 56th minute to cut into the lead making it a 36-10 match. The Lions immediately responded with a try of their own in the 59th minute.
Brianna Beath scored her second try of the match to put the Lions on top 43-10. Lindenwood scored three more tries in the second half at the 61st, 68th, and 74th minutes to take a 64-10 lead.
Gabby Bryant scored at the 61st minute, while Lucia Del Campo Andres scored two tries at the 68th and 74th minute. Lindenwood's defense settled in for the remainder of the half allowing only one additional try in the 78th minute to improve their record to 2-1 on the season. The 17 points given up was a season-best for the Lions.
With two tries and two conversions this morning,
Madison Jersey leads the team in tries with five.
Joselin Roque Lopez also went a perfect 4/4 on conversions against the Mids, taking the team lead in that category. Del Campo Andres and Beath both had two tries to tie for the match-high in tries.
The Lions will now hit the road for two matches in three days as they will travel to Quinnipiac University on Friday, September 19 and Princeton University on Sunday, September 21. The match on Friday will begin at 12 p.m CT and Sunday's match will be at 10 a.m. CT.
