Lions Overcome Nanooks 7-4 in Fairbanks

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Lindenwood men's hockey team (12-12-0) defeated Alaska (7-14-2) by a score of 7-4 on Saturday night to split the weekend series in Fairbanks. The Lions scored all seven of their goals in the final two periods after trailing 2-0 at the first intermission.

Game Overview
Despite outshooting the Nanooks 11-8, the Lions fell behind 2-0 in the first period, with Alaska's Nathan Rickey opening the scoring with a goal at the 6:40 mark before Michael Citara found the back of the net late in the period to expand the lead heading into the intermission. Both teams went 0-2 on the power play in the frame.

LU's offensive pressure would pay off early in the second period, with Jake Delaney putting Lindenwood in the scoring column at the 1:09 mark on a wrist shot goal from the faceoff circle. Brady Yakesh and Olivier Houde were credited with assists on the play.

Then, following a high stick penalty taken by the Nanooks, Giovanni Morneau scored his sixth power play goal of the season on a long rebound off a shot by Nolan Seed from the point, tying the game at 2-2.

Alaska would briefly regain the lead with a Tommy Cronin goal at the 6:25 mark, but Lindenwood answered right back two minutes later as Jake Southgate lit the lamp with a shortrange wrister on a feed from Giovanni Morneau. Nolan Seed also picked up an assist on the play.

LU would take their first lead of the weekend eight minutes into the third period, as Olivier Houde was able to follow up his own shot to score from close range. The Lions doubled their lead five minutes later with Jacob Fletcher splitting a pair of Nanook defenders at the blue line to create a one-on-one opportunity with the goalie, which he capitalized on to make the score 5-3.

Lindenwood continued pouring it on in the game's waning moments with a pair of empty net goals, as Anselmo Rego extended the lead to 6-3 with a power play conversion at the 16:16 mark before Fletcher scored from the red line for his second goal of the evening at the 17:06 mark.

Alaska added one more score in the contest's final minute, with Cade Ahrenholz cashing in for a power play goal to make the final score 7-4.

Lindenwood was outshot 35-28 in the game but went 2-6 with the man advantage while killing off seven of eight Nanook power plays.

The win snapped a five-game skid away from home for the Lions, improving their road record to 5-5-0 this season.
