ERIE, PA. - The Lindenwood Women's Hockey team fell in Game One of the AHA Semifinal round on Friday afternoon by a score of 2–1 at Mercyhurst.
Michaela Paulinyova lit the lamp for the Lions late in the first period, but the Lakers goaltender stopped the last 13 shots that the Lions had throughout the rest of the game to take the series opener.
Mercyhurst opened the scoring early in the first period when Julia Perjus found the back of the net at the 3:22 mark off an assist from Sophie McKinley, giving the Lakers an early 1–0 lead. The Lions responded late in the period, as Paulinyova scored at 18:09 with assists from Zsofia Pazmandi and Tatiana Blichova to even the game at 1–1 heading into the first intermission.
The second period remained scoreless, with both teams generating chances but unable to capitalize. Goaltending played a key role throughout the matchup, as Mercyhurst's Magdalena Luggin stopped all seven shots that she faced in the second frame, while Madison Bowtell turned aside all 11 Laker shots as the game remained tied with one period to go. The deciding moment came at the 14:29 mark of the third period when Mercyhurst capitalized on a power-play opportunity. Perjus scored her second goal of the game on assists from Maja Alenius and Payten Evans to give the Lakers a 2–1 lead late in the period. The Lions pulled the goalie with just under 1:30 to go in the contest, but Lindenwood only generated two shots with one being on goal. The shot on goal would come off the stick of Paige Cline with six seconds left, but the shot was saved by Luggin as the Lakers hung on for the 2-1 win in Game One.
For the game, Mercyhurst outshot Lindenwood 36–23 overall, including a 13-shot effort in the third period. Faceoffs were nearly even, with Lindenwood holding a slight 31–29 advantage. Zsofia Pazmandi led the Lions at the dot with 14 wins, while Perjus won 17 faceoffs for Mercyhurst. The Freshman duo of Michaela Paulinyova and Tatiana Blichova combined for nine shots in Game One, as Paulinoyva led the Lions with five shots on goal while Blichova ended the game with four.
Lindenwood will now battle tomorrow afternoon in Game Two of the series with puck drop scheduled for 12:00 p.m. CT.
