LEADING OFF
The Lindenwood baseball team begins the month of May with a critical OVC series at SIUE this weekend. The Lions currently sit two games back of the Cougars in the conference standings. Game one is set for Friday at 5:00 p.m.
NOTES TO KNOW
- Lindenwood has an overall record of 25-19 with a 10-8 mark in league play. The Lions started OVC play 0-6 but have won 10 of their last 12 in-conference. They are 8-9 on the road this season with a 3-3 record in OVC road games.
- Lindenwood is batting .258 as a team this season, which is lowest in the OVC, but has an average of .287 since the beginning of April. They have a batting average of .269 in OVC play. Â
- Will Geary leads the Lions with a .314 batting average. He hit .397 (25-63) with five doubles, two triples, and seven RBIs during the month of April. He leads the team with 24 stolen bases, which is a Lindenwood NCAA era single-season record.
- Sam Driscoll has been on a tear recently, batting .439 (18-41) with three doubles, two triples, three homers, 11 RBIs, and 13 runs scored over the last eleven games.
- The Lions have a staff ERA of 3.95, which is 16th best nationally. They are allowing just 3.16 walks per nine innings for the seventh lowest average in the nation. In conference play, LU has an even more impressive 3.83 ERA
- Seth Benes leads the OVC with an ERA of 2.24 while limiting opponents to a .194 batting average. He leads the club with 60 strikeouts, which is second most in the conference.
- Josh Newell is right behind Benes with a 2.40 ERA through a conference-leading 70.0 innings pitched. He has 43 strikeouts compared to just 10 walks.
- Lucas Niemeyer's 2.88 ERA is fourth best in the OVC. He has allowed the fewest earned runs (16) in the league among qualified pitchers.
SCOUTING THE COUGARS
- SIUE is 24-21 overall and are currently locked in a four-way tie for first place in the OVC with a conference record of 12-6. The Cougars are 2-4 in their last six OVC contests after dropping two of three against Western Illinois and SEMO the last two weekends.
- SIUE is batting .274 as a team this season, which ranks in the bottom half of the conference. Ryan Niedzwiedz leads the squad with a .345 batting average while pacing the club in doubles (12), home runs (20) and RBIs (50). His home run total is most in the OVC.
- SIUE has a staff ERA of 6.59, which is sixth lowest in the OVC. They are third in the conference with 332 strikeouts and are limiting opponents to a .262 batting average, which is tied for second lowest in the league.
- Spencer Stearns (5-3) and Tim Teixeira (5-5) are tied for the team lead in wins. Stearns has a team-best 4.32 ERA while Teixeira paces the squad with 57 strikeouts.
SERIES NOTES
- Lindenwood is 5-5 all-time against their rivals from the Metro East. SIUE took two of three in St. Charles last season before rematching at the OVC Tournament, where the Lions came way with a 7-4 win. Â
- Lindenwood's last series win over SIUE came in 2023, with the Lions winning two of three at home in their first meeting as OVC opponents.
- Neither team has been swept in the series.
- The Lions have scored seven or more runs in each of their five wins over the Cougars, including three wins with 11 or more runs.
LAST TIME OUT
- Lindenwood defeated Southern Illinois 12-2 by run rule on Tuesday to complete the season sweep over the Salukis. Tanner Simpson delivered the game-winning swing with a walk-off RBI double in the seventh.
- LU tallied 12 hits in the contest, with Will Geary, Filip Sarota, and Owen Ralph leading the team with two hits apiece. Ralph also posted three RBIs, finishing tied with Spencer Pederson for the team lead.
- Meanwhile, Ethan Smith was credited with the win after surrendering just one run on four hits with three strikeouts through 3.2 innings of work.
- Luke Wright had a solid outing in relief, giving up one run on two hits with three strikeouts through 2.1 innings. Tanner Paschke tossed one innings of shutout ball to finish the game.
WEEKEND REWIND
- Lindenwood took two of three against Little Rock last weekend for their fourth consecutive OVC series win.
- The Lions limited the Trojans to four total runs on the weekend while holding them to a .207 batting average. Lucas Niemeyer and Easton Rakers combined for Lindenwood's first shutout of OVC play in a 3-0 win on Sunday.
- In two relief appearances, Easton Rakers allowed zero runs on just two hits with a pair of strikeouts through 4.1 innings. He held Little Rock to a .133 batting average.
- Will Geary led Lindenwood offensively, going 4-12 with an RBI and one run scored.
