BRENTWOOD, Tenn. –
Josh Newell has been named Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week following his complete game performance in Lindenwood's 3-2 win over Southeast Missouri on Thursday. It marks the second time this season – and the seventh for his career – Newell has won the award.
The senior was completely dialed in, tossing 8.2 innings of shutout ball before a two-out error in the ninth extended the game and allowed a pair of unearned runs to come across.
Newell was still able to finish the job to secure the 3-2 win for Lindenwood and notch his first complete game of the season. He finished the outing with a 0.44 WHIP, allowing just three hits with one walk while matching his season-high with five strikeouts.
It was the third complete game of Newell's career, adding to a pair of nine-inning shutouts he threw last season.
On the season, Newell has an OVC second-best 2.08 ERA through a conference leading 52.0 innings pitched. He has fanned 29 batters while surrendering just nine walks.
Lindenwood travels to Evansville on Wednesday to take on the Purple Aces at 6:00 p.m. before continuing conference play against Western Illinois at home this weekend. Game one against the Leathernecks is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 10th.
