Cycling
For the first time in the history of the cycling program, a Lindenwood mountain bike rider made the podium at the Collegiate Mountain Bike Nationals, concluded October 21 in Angel Fire, N.M.  Madison Pitts finished second in the downhill event and fourth in the dual slalom races.

Pitts emerged from the downhill qualifying runs on Friday in third place.  She improved her time in the finals run to 3:28, which was enough to move her into second place and a spot on the podium.

In the dual slalom races on Sunday, Pitts held the fastest qualifying time in women's Division 1, which gave her the most favorable match-up in the race brackets.  She took advantage of her position to advance into the semifinals where she faced Stephanie Caluag from Lindsey Wilson College.  Pitts won her first two runs against Caluag, but in the final race to determine who would advance to the finals, Pitts crashed hard in the final turn allowing Caluag to advance and eventually win the dual slalom national championship.

The force of the crash actually broke the bike of Pitts, so she had to switch to a new bike for the third place race.  Dealing with painful injuries and an unfamiliar bike, she was unable to defeat Jill Behlen from the University of Wyoming, so Pitts settled for the fourth place finish on the podium.

In the women's cross country event on Friday, Rachel Byus took 22nd while Tiana Row finished 28th.  Zak Hafner had the top race for the Lions in the men's cross country event, finishing 45th.  CJ Brish was 54th, Nicholas Grigsby was 65th and Andrew Kramer and Kurt Tweedy took 68th and 69th respectively.

In the women's short track event, Byus led the main climb of the race and then settled in for a 17th place finish while Row took 37th.  Brish took 29th in the men's short track race to lead the Lions.  Hafner took 55th, Grigsby finished 60th despite an early race crash, Kramer was 64th and Tweedy finished 67th.

In another first for Lindenwood cycling, the mountain bike squad took 10th in the Team Omnium for the best finish in program history.

The cyclo-cross season gets underway next for the Lions as they travel to Martinsville, Ind. for the Bradford Woods Cyclo-Cross meet, hosted by Indiana State and Notre Dame October 27.

Men’s Water Polo
Men's water polo won three games in two days including a nail biting 17-16 victory over Saint Louis University (SLU) in the finals to capture the 2012 Missouri Valley Division Championship on October 21.

After compiling a perfect 8-0 record in regular season play, the Lions entered the tournament as the number one seed.  In the first game on Saturday, Lindenwood easily handled the number five seed Western Illinois 18-5.

The second game of the day for the Lions pitted them against their own B team, who had earned the fourth seed in the conference.  Lindenwood defeated its B team 23-5, but since two teams from the same university were playing each other, by conference rule the win goes down as a 5-0 forfeit win.

The two wins qualified the Lions for the finals against number two seed Saint Louis University.  The Billikens advanced by clobbering number six seed Southern Illinois 17-1 and then escaping with an overtime win against number three seed Washington University in St. Louis, the host school for the event.

In the championship game, Lindenwood would play from behind for most of the contest as the defense had trouble finding answers against the Billikens offense.  Lindenwood was trailing 16-12 with only 5:20 remaining in the game when the Lions offense awakened and scored four unanswered goals to tie the score at 16 with 90 seconds left.  But, the drama was only beginning.

Lindenwood had a golden opportunity to take the lead with a man advantage, but failed to score.  Then, with only 30 seconds remaining, the Lions took a penalty that awarded the Billikens a five meter penalty shot.  At that range, it seemed that all hope was lost, but Lindenwood goaltender Guilem Gali made a miraculous save to give the Lions one more chance on offense.

Lindenwood captains Justin Bowers and Toni Storic would not waste the opportunity.  With time running out, Bowers waited for the perfect time to pass to Storic who drew a foul and from seven meters out, shot a screamer into the back of the net with four seconds left in regulation for the game winner.

In the championship game, Alvaro Castro led the Lions with four goals while Mohamed Samih and Andrew Rabe each added three.  Andrew Diemer, Maulana Herfianto and Storic all scored twice while Marc Hernandez added one goal.

By winning the Missouri Valley Division title, Lindenwood qualifies for the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division 1 Club National Championship which will take place November 9-11 in Corvallis, Ore.

Women’s Wrestling
Women's wrestling went 4-2 in team competition to finish third at the Cliff Keen Oklahoma City University Duals in Oklahoma City, Okla. October 19-20.

Competing in pool C, the Lady Lions fell to Missouri Valley College 21-18 in their initial dual of the event on Friday.  After falling behind 14-1 early, Lindenwood battled back in the later weight classes to pull within one point before eventually coming up short.

The second dual of the day against Midland went much better as Lindenwood dominated the Warriors with a 43-4 win.  The Lady Lions were victorious in nine different weight classes while only losing in one.

Lindenwood captured its second dual win of the day against the Oklahoma City University Black squad 35-9.  With the 2-1 dual record on Friday, Lindenwood advanced to the Gold Pool on Saturday with a chance to win the overall championship of the event.

The day started nicely as the Lady Lions defeated Simon Fraser (B.C., Canada) 25-15.  Lindenwood went 6-4 in individual matches in the dual.

Lindenwood's hopes of an overall win at the duals came to an end with a 31-10 defeat at the hands of perennial women's wrestling power and host Oklahoma City University (OCU).  The Lady Lions were never in contention as they fell behind 19-0 in the first four matches.

Despite the loss, Lindenwood had qualified for the third place dual, which was a rematch from day one against Missouri Valley College.  This time, the Lady Lions would come out on top with a 22-17 win.    After losing her first meeting on Friday, Des Ramos (101 lbs.) earned a key win for the Lady Lions right out of the gate in her rematch against Dalina Vuong from Missouri Valley to put four points on the board for Lindenwood.  The six point swing from day one to day two gave the Lady Lions the edge in the dual and a third place trophy for the weekend.

Shauna Isbell (130 lbs.) was the top wrestler for Lindenwood, going 6-0 at the event.  Rachael Shannon ((143 lbs.) and Kendra Lewis (170 lbs.) were both 4-0 to help the Lady Lions.

Lindenwood goes right back on the road for the Jamestown Tournament in Jamestown, N.D.  Competition begins at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 26.

Bowling
The women's bowling team defended its title at the Orange and Black Classic October 20-21 in Dayton, Ohio.  The men's team finished second in preliminary competition, but was eliminated in the first round of match play to finish sixth.

The Lady Lions used a consistently solid performance on Saturday highlighted by a high team game of 1097 to open up a 180 pin lead on the first day of competition.  That margin was trimmed to as little as seven pins midway through baker competition on Sunday, but Lindenwood charged down the stretch, averaging over 210 the last eight games to finish 188 pins ahead of second place Wright State and earn the top seed for a best-of-five single elimination bracket that would determine the tournament champion.

The Lady Lions faced number eight seeded Bellarmine in the quarterfinals.  After exchanging victories in the first four games, the fifth and deciding game looked to be heading the way of the Knights, but Lindenwood finished with four straight strikes to edge Bellarmine 209-203 to advance.

After the close escape, the Lady Lions faced number four seed Notre Dame College (Ohio) in the semifinals.  After shooting 212 in a game one win, Lindenwood dropped the next game, but then rebounded with 222 and 255 to close out the Falcons and advance to the finals against number two seeded Wright State.

The Lady Lions made quick work of the Raiders in the championship round.  Wright State averaged over 200 per game in the match, but Lindenwood posted games of 237, 246 and 238 to sweep the Raiders in three straight games and claim the title for the second year in a row and the third time in the past four years.

Amanda Greene led the Lady Lions with a total of 1,245 (207.5 average) for six games and finished sixth individually, earning a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

The Lions bowled five team games over 1,000 on Saturday, but finished the day 18 pins behind tournament leader Morehead State University.  Lindenwood tried to close the gap on Sunday during baker play, but couldn't make up any ground despite posting the third highest day-two total.  The Lions ended the preliminary portion of the tournament solidly in second, 196 pins behind Morehead State.

As the number two seed, Lindenwood faced seven seed Saginaw Valley State University in the quarterfinal round of bracket match play.  The Lions quickly gained a 1-0 lead with a 221-149 victory in game one, but the Cardinals found their rhythm in game two and dispatched Lindenwood 234-202 to even the match.  It was all SVSU in game three as the Lions struggled to post a 148 game against 220 from the Cardinals.  Needing to win two straight to prevent elimination, Lindenwood came up eight pins short in game four, falling 196-188.  With the top seed Wright State being upset by eventual tournament champion Calumet College of St. Joseph in the first round, the Lions would have to settle for a sixth place finish overall.

Kyle Sherman led Lindenwood on the weekend with a six game total of 1,352 (225.33 average) to earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

Lindenwood bowling travels to Lafayette, Ind. for the Boilermaker Classic October 27-28.  The Lions won the event last season while the Lady Lions finished third.

Men’s Ice Hockey
For the first few weeks of the season, men's ice hockey had struggled to get solid play on both offense and defense.  In the first game of a two-game series at home against number five ranked Oklahoma, the Lions  surrendered their least number of goals in a game all season, but the offense was completely shut down in a 3-0 loss October 19.  Lindenwood finally put it all together to earn a 5-3 win and a series split with Oklahoma on October 20.

In game one of the series, the Sooners took the lead with a goal in the second and added two more in the third.  Oklahoma goaltender Colin Fernandes entered the game with a 1.20 goals against average and he improved those numbers by stopping all 30 shots that he faced from the Lions.

Goaltender Kirk Croswell stopped 20 of 23 shots in taking the loss for Lindenwood.

For a moment in the first period of game two, it looked like it might be another frustrating day as Lindenwood fell behind on a Sooners goal just over four minutes into the game, but the Lions bounced right back with their own score from Neeco Belanger less than two minutes later.  Only 78 seconds after that, Lindenwood took the lead in the game for good on a goal from Jeremy Meletti.  Freshman Darnell Dyck and Grant Gorczyca earned assists on the play.  With the helper, Gorczyca reached a milestone in his Lindenwood career by earning his 100th assist.

The Lions would dominate play in the second period.  Meletti scored his second goal of the game on a one-timer to give the Lions a 3-1 lead just 35 seconds into the second.

The Lions would score their fourth goal at the 5:33 mark on a goal from Gorczyca and opened up a 5-1 lead when Tim Hennessey entered the zone and fired a shot through the five-hole to light the lamp at the 8:56 mark of the second.
Oklahoma did fight back with a goal a few minutes later and they pulled to within two scores late in the third period, but the Lions maintained control of the game until the final horn.

Kirk Croswell turned away 28 of the 31 shots he faced to earn the win and Lindenwood outshot the Sooners 39 to 31 in the contest.

The Lions improved to 2-4-2 on the season.  With the victory over a top ranked team, they can take some confidence on the road as they face Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Okla. October 26-27.  Lindenwood suffered two, one-goal losses at the hands of the Bronchos to begin the season at home three weeks ago.  Game time on both Friday and Saturday night is at 7 p.m.

Roller Hockey
Roller hockey began its season with two wins and a tie in three games played October 20-21 at the Wheel in Wright City, Mo.

In the first contest on Saturday, the Lions skated to a 3-3 tie with the University of Illinois.  Lindenwood out-played the Illini the entire game and outshot them 33-16, but had trouble getting the puck past their goaltender.  Ultimately, it took a game tying goal from Daniel Inouye with 35 seconds remaining to even clinch the tie.  Alex Carroll and Robert Berman scored the other two goals for Lindenwood and Cody Kettler helped with an assist.  Kevin Dwyer stopped 13 of 16 shots for the Lions between the pipes.

In the second game of the day, the Lindenwood coaching staff made some line changes and the result was a 10-0 win over Missouri State.  Casey Escarcega led the Lions offense with three goals and an assist and two newcomers to the team made key contributions.  Ryan Dauernheim scored the first two goals of his college career and Brennan Luscombe picked up his first score while adding two assists.  Dwyer earned the shutout win in goal.

Lindenwood hosted St. Charles Community College in the final game of the weekend on Sunday and earned a 12-3 victory.  Escarcega was the offensive star with four goals in the game.  Carroll added two scores and two assists and Luscombe lit the lamp three times for the Lions.  Scott Bailey was solid between the pipes in his first game on the D1 squad, stopping 21 of 24 shots to earn the win.

Lindenwood begins the season with a 2-0-1 record.  The Lions are back in action November 2-3.  They face the University of Missouri-St. Louis at 8 p.m. Friday at Midwest Sports Hockey in Ballwin, Mo. and they host St. Charles Community College on Saturday at noon and then take on Illinois at 2 p.m. Both games Saturday will be played at the Wheel in Wright City, Mo.

Chess
Five Lindenwood chess players were invited to play in the 2012 Spice Cup Open in downtown Clayton, Mo. October 16-20.  NM Nolan Hendrickson, WIM Carla Heredia, WGM Anna Sharevich, IM Levan Bregadze and IM Priyadharshan Kannappan were among a highly rated field of players from the United States and abroad.

Hendrickson delivered the biggest highlight for the Lindenwood team at the event.  Despite being one of the lowest rated players, he finished with five out of nine points and qualified for an International Master norm.  In the first round, Hendrickson upset IM Keaton Kiewra and he later topped IM Zhanibek Amanov.  Needing three norms to earn the IM title, Hendrickson took a big step with his performance.

In other action, Kannappan scored 2.5 points in his first three games, but as the tournament wore on, it became a grueling test of mental endurance and he lost three games that he could have won or earned a draw.  Kannappan finished with four out of nine points.

Bregadze, Sharevich and Heredia also finished with four points each, despite having some exciting encounters with top Grandmasters along the way.  Bregadze drew GM Yuri Shulman, a talented player who has finished among the top players at the U.S. Championship on multiple occasions.  Heredia also drew Shulman and played him tough, only to lose by a small margin in the final endgame.

The 2012 Spice Cup Open was sponsored in part by the Susan Polgar Institute for Chess Excellence (SPICE).
The Lindenwood chess team will next compete in the Duncan-Oxley Collegiate Online tournament November 3.

 Billiards
The Lindenwood billiards team experienced its first taste of victory at a tournament hosted by Purdue University October 20 in West Lafayette, Ind.  The Lions won the 15-Ball event and finished fifth in both the 8-Ball and 9-Ball events.

Sean Sommers led Lindenwood in scoring on the weekend and Jaime Martialay had an impressive outing at the tournament, including a full table run-out for his first perfect game of the season.

After several matches against St. Louis area club teams, it was the first collegiate event for Lindenwood and featured teams from the University of Illinois and the University of Indiana, in addition to the host school.

Prior to the Purdue tournament on October 18, the Lions faced Ronn's Raiders in a 9-Ball match and were defeated 25-15.  Sommers went 5-0 for Lindenwood on the day.

Lindenwood billiards gets its next test on the road at a three day, 16 team tournament hosted by the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Mich. November 2-4.

Olympic Weightlifting
The Olympic weightlifting team earned six first place finishes and one second at the Kansas Open October 13 in Olathe, Kan.

Cayla Amatulli was named the best lifter of the 18-20 Open division as she finished first with a total of 98 kg.  She successfully lifted 38 kg in the snatch and 60 kg in the clean and jerk.

Debate
The Lindenwood debate team traveled to two events over the past two weekends with promising results for the first year program.

At the Blue Devil Debates October 12-14 in Kansas City, Kan., the team of Abby Fallon and Adam Mire and the duo of Nicole Nave and Devi Collins both ended with a 3-3 record and came within a few speaker points of advancing to the quarterfinal round.  Lindenwood was also presented with the Newcomer Award by the director of the tournament in honor of the first year of participation in the Cross Examination Debate Association.

At the 57th Annual George R. Pflaum Debates October 19-21 in Emporia, Kan., the team of Emma Verstraete and Josh Pruschen ended with a 2-4 record in their first competition together.

After a weekend off, the Lions will next compete at the Joe C. Jackson Debates in Edmond, Okla. November 2-4.

Women’s Rugby
Women's rugby battled the St. Louis Sabres and came away with a 39-12 victory at the Lindenwood Track October 21.  The Division 1 team is one of the oldest and most successful women's rugby clubs in the St. Louis area.

The Lady Lions opened up scoring shortly after the first half kickoff when fullback Jolene Stiebel crossed the line to give Lindenwood a 5-0 lead.  Lindenwood added two more tries from Jordyn Hawkins and Jenny Garza and the Sabres scored once to make the score 17-5 at the intermission.

Being an exhibition game, the Sabres opted for a shortened 25 minute second half, but that didn't slow the Lady Lions offense.  Lindenwood crossed the try line four more times with scores from Hawkins, Ce Ce Calloway and two from captain Amanda Martin.  The Sabres answered with one try and a conversion giving the Lady Lions the 39-12 win and great practice for the upcoming collegiate playoffs.

Lindenwood will get some additional preparation when they host another exhibition game against Eastern Illinois at the Lindenwood Track on Thursday, October 25.   The two teams will play the sevens format in a best-of-three scenario.
The first round of the Illinois/Chicago Area Rugby Football Playoffs begin on November 4 in St. Charles, Mo.   The Lady Lions earned their berth by winning the Illinois Rugby Football Union.

Shotgun Sports
The shotgun sports team won the overall team title at the Central Scholastic Clay Target Program Regional Shoot in Grand Island, Neb. October 12-14.  The Lions captured four out of five team events and took the top three places for the High Overall Individual Awards.

Lindenwood won the team events of American Trap, Wobble Trap, Doubles Skeet and Sporting Clays, but the Lions were denied a clean sweep when Fort Hays State captured the Five-Man Shoot.

The Lindenwood team of Hunter Hopkins, Mitch Muncey, Brendan Appel, Colton Raley and Brady Simms finished first while the Lions team of Trevor Sorenson, Walt Reaster, Zac Brody, Matt Schutzius, and Elliott Toll took second.

Reaster won the High Overall Individual Award while Appel finished second and Toll took third.

Individual event champions included Appel in Wobble Trap with a score of 99 out of 100, Toll in Doubles Skeet with a score of 97 out of 100 and Sorenson in Sporting Clays with a score of 96 out of 100.

Appel also finished as runner-up in American Skeet while Toll and Raley tied for third in the event.  Reaster earned a third place finish in American Trap.

The shotgun sports team will travel to San Antonio, Texas for the National Sporting Clays Association Nationals October 23-28.

Hall of Fame
The Lindenwood University NCAA and Student Life Sports Departments joined together on October 19 to induct the 2012 class of the Lindenwood Sports Hall of Fame. Seven individuals and two teams were honored at the Sixth Annual Hall of Fame Banquet.

Highlighting the 2012 class was the induction of Lindenwood President James D. Evans, PhD, and Lindenwood Vice President Richard Boyle, PhD.

Since becoming President in 2006, Evans has reshaped Lindenwood athletics for future success. He authorized the University's application to the NCAA and supported that move with staffing and financial resources. He has also continued Lindenwood's tradition of building some of the top athletics facilities in the country, including the $9 million Student-Athlete Center, which features the school's Academic Success Center. Evans also created the Student Life Sports Department to house the non-NCAA sports programs. He has continued to fund that department with ample resources to ensure it is the most successful Student Life Sports program in the nation.

Boyle came to Lindenwood in 1997, and the former University of Arkansas football player brought with him his enthusiasm for intercollegiate athletics. One of Boyle's biggest contributions to the athletics department is the establishment of many endowed scholarships and awards that benefit student-athletes, including the Boyle Football Endowed Scholarship, the Rick and Karen Boyle Endowed Scholarship, and the Killian Physical Education Honors Award. Boyle has consulted and advised during the hiring process for many of Lindenwood's top coaches. Boyle also serves on the President's Athletic Advisory Committee, which has helped the school transition to the NCAA level.

The former student-athletes inducted were Dustin Bevard (Basketball), Jake Dieffenbach (Wrestling), Rhonda Kacizak-Maulson (Soccer and Softball), Kelly Massman (Soccer), and Greg Thompson (Roller Hockey). The teams earning their place among the best in Lindenwood history were the 2000 women's soccer team and the 2005-06 men's basketball team.

Four current Lindenwood Student-Athletes received awards during the banquet. Synchronized swimmer Reem Abdalazem and women's wrestler Shauna Isbell received the Student Achievement Award for outstanding accomplishments outside of college competition. Abdalazem competed for Egypt in last year's Summer Olympic Games in London. Isbell recently earned a spot on the U.S. National Team after finished second at the U.S. Women's World Team Trials.

Women's lacrosse player Jamie Miller and cheerleader Jessica Gann were the inaugural recipients of the Shining Light Award. The Shining Light Award recognizes excellence in the classroom, on the field of play, and in the various University communities. Among Miller's off-the-field activities are working with the Special Olympics and youth lacrosse clinics. Gann's community service includes working with Backstoppers, the Breast Cancer Walk for a Cure, the Epilepsy Foundation Walk for a Cause, the Special Olympics, a special needs cheerleading squad, nursery homes, and a food pantry.

Lindenwood alumnus and St. Louis sports radio personality Bob Ramsey was the emcee at the event, and Lindenwood Sports Hall of Famer and head athletics trainer Randy Biggerstaff gave the invocation. Dr. Evans and NCAA Athletics Director John Creer both spoke at the induction ceremony and helped present the awards, and SLS Athletics Director Mike Elam helped Creer present the Shining Light Awards.
