Francine Nzilampa won the women's individual title and both Lindenwood men's and women's cross country teams had top five finishes at the 22-team NAIA Mid-States Preview on Saturday in Winfield, Kan.
Nzilampa finished the 5,000m women's race in a time of 17:41, winning the event by 46 seconds over the runner-up finisher. The women's team had a top heavy finish with two other runners in the Top 10. Jackie Barkechir was third, one minute behind Nzilampa, and
Yasmina Elkasmi was tenth with a time of 19:21.
The Lady Lions had a drop off after that, with
Jan Bennett coming in 40th in a time of 20:07 and Tanya Chibanda finishing 70th with a mark of 21:05. Those five runners gave Lindenwood a final team score of 112, which was good for fourth-place, 20 points behind the event's team champion.
On the men's side, Lindenwood's runners were more balanced as that squad came in fifth in a tight five-team battle. The Lions had 133 points, just eight shy of the team winner.
Habbani Mustapha led the team with a 10th place showing, finishing the race in a time of 25:53.
Nicholas Yegon completed the course in 26:04, 12 seconds better than teammate Chirchir Samson. Yegon finished in 15th place and Samson was 21st. Rounding out Lindenwood's top five were
Brian Soule (26:41) and Josh Schmidt (27:03), who were 40th and 48th, respectively.
Lindenwood will next compete in the HAAC Championships on Nov. 7 in Marshall, Mo.
