The field hockey team dropped its season opener to DePauw University, 4-0, this afternoon.
Accustomed to the new field turf at Harlan C. Hunter stadium, the Lions struggled with the speed of the game on natural grass and were never able to get anything going against DePauw's stingy defense.
The Tigers scored the game winner on an unassisted goal by Kimberly Trainor with just over five minutes remaining in the first half. In the second half, DePauw added goals from Sarah Riffle, Katie Sowar and Lauren Castagno. All three goals were unassisted.
For the Lions,
Caitlin Erickson recorded six saves but surrendered the game winner.
Samantha Brown took over as goalie in the second half, saving five shots, but allowed three goals. Lindenwood recorded just six shots on goal compared to 23 for DePauw.
Lindenwood returns to action on Saturday, September 5, at Centre College. Game time is slated for 11:00 a.m.
