Lions Open 2010 Season With Sweep Over Faulkner

The 12th ranked Lindenwood baseball team opened its 2010 season with a sweep over Faulkner. The Lions won game one by a 6-3 score and took the second game 4-1.

Shelby Anderson was the star of the first game with a pair of solo homeruns. His first one came in the top of third inning and tied the score at three. An inning later, Anthony Dallosto opened up the inning with a double and then scored on a one-out single by Bryce Holland.

In the fifth, Lindenwood got two insurance runs, starting with Shelby Anderson's second homer. Daniel Sandello then reached base with a single and came around to score on Ryan Fariss' RBI base hit.

The insurance runs ended up not being necessary as Zach Malawey threw a complete game for Lindenwood. He only had one rough inning, giving up three runs in the second on two hits and a walk. Malawey struck out 12 batters and gave up four hits and three walks.

The Lions' pitching dominated the second game as a trio of pitchers combined for a one-hitter. Starter Evan Vinyard gave up the lone hit in the third inning with one out, but quickly got out of that inning with back-to-back strikeouts. In the final inning, Faulkner threatened as four walks scored one run and brought the go-ahead run to the plate. Jeff Wilkins ended the threat with a strikeout and popout to close out the contest.

Vinyard picked up the win, going 6 1/3 innings and allowing one hit and three walks. He struck out 11 in his Lindenwood debut. Wilkins got the save after pitching 2/3 innings and recording a walk and a strikeout.

Offensively in the second game, Lindenwood grabbed the lead from the very start when Shelby Anderson hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning to score Holland. The Lions added another run in the fourth after Frank Corpus led off the inning with a single and came around to score. Lindenwood once again added two insurance runs late, highlighted by Cody Anderson's double in the seventh inning which sparked a pair of runs.
