The No. 21 Lindenwood volleyball team bounced back in convincing fashion, defeating No. 24 Carroll 25-16, 20-25, 25-19, 25-12 late Saturday afternoon. Earlier in the day, Benedictine knocked off the Lady Lions in five sets.
A 7-0 run early in the first set propelled Lindenwood to 25-16 victory. In the second set, the Lady Lions fell behind 8-1, but eventually rallied to tie the game at 17. Both teams sideout, and Carroll scored three straight points to pull ahead for good and even the match at one game apiece.
In the third set Lindenwood trailed 12-11, but a four point burst proved to be the difference, and the Lady Lions would never relinquish the lead. Lindenwood scored the first nine points of the fourth set to bury the Saints early and won 25-12.
Ellen Fandry logged her second double-double of the day with 14 kills and 14 digs.
Kristy Dreisewerd had 10 putaways.
Kelsey Biggs recorded 24 assists, and
Alexandria Malam had her second double-double of the day with 17 assists and 10 digs.
Patricia Erb posted a team-best 16 digs and
Kaila Schrimpf had 14.
Kelsey Jo Vogler totaled seven blocks.
Both teams wore pink jerseys as part of the Dig for the Cure initiative, and Lindenwood collected donations throughout the day for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation.
The last time Lindenwood and Benedictine met on the volleyball court, the Ravens were putting the finishing touches on a come from behind victory over the Lady Lions in the HAAC tournament. Saturday afternoon, the same story played out in St. Charles for the second straight time.
Lindenwood lead 2-1 entering the fourth set, but Benedictine rallied to defeat the No. 21 Lady Lions 17-25, 25-19, 23-25, 25-23, 25-13.
The Lady Lions used an early five point burst to take control in game one, eventually stretching their lead to six at 17-11. Benedictine clawed back closing the gap to four at 20-16. After both teams sideout, Lindenwood converted four straight points to take game one.
Trailing 8-7 in the second set, the Ravens surged ahead with a 6-1 run. The lead would eventually balloon to 19-12 and Benedictine stymied a late Lady Lion rally to tie the match at one game apiece.
Kelsey Kennedy and
Katie Weber helped Lindenwood jump out to an 11-6 lead in game three. Kennedy logged three kills and Weber chipped in with a pair of blocks. The Lady Lions stretched the lead to 20-12, and after a late rally by Benedictine, won 25-23.
The fourth game was close throughout with neither team holding a lead larger than four. Tied at 18 late, Lindenwood scored three straight to go ahead 21-18. The Ravens responded with three straight of their own, and eventually took a 23-22 lead. A costly Benedictine service error erased the one point lead. With Lindenwood serving for the lead, Benedictine scored and moments later a Raven kill sent the match to a fifth set.
The two teams were tied at eight midway through the final set when Benedictine used a decisive 4-0 run to pull away for good and complete the come from behind win.
Fandry posted a double-double with 17 kills and 16 digs. Dreisewerd was also in double-figures with 10 kills. Kennedy and Weber both had nine putaways each. Malam also had a double-double of 24 assists and 18 digs. Biggs finished with 22 assists.
Defensively, Erb logged a team-high 19 digs and
Alyssa Showers had 12. Vogler had seven blocks, and Weber and Dreisewerd both had six apiece.
The last time the Lady Lions lost two HAAC matches in a season was 2006.
Lindenwood (17-11, 4-2) will play No. 24 Carroll later today.
