The No. 20 Lindenwood women's volleyball team dropped its pool play opener to No. 7 Biola at the NAIA Volleyball National Championship presented by Siouxland Sports Medicine Foundation in Sioux City, Iowa. Biola swept the Lady Lions 27-25, 25-13, 25-23.
The first set was close throughout with neither team taking a lead larger than three. Trailing midway through the game, Lindenwood surged ahead to grab a brief lead and eventually served for game point. However, mistakes would doom the Lady Lions and Biola prevailed 27-25.
The second set saw the Eagles quickly build a double-digit lead that they would never relinquish.
In the third set, Biola appeared to be well on its way towards a sweep, but a late rally by Lindenwood evened the score. The Lady Lions held a two point lead late, but let it slip away and eventually fell 25-23.
Katie Weber logged a season-high 15 kills on 20 attempts to pace the Lindenwood offense.
Krista Yoder tallied eight kills, and
Erin Anselman and
Ellen Fandry each finished with seven.
Alexandria Malam recorded 21 assists and
Kelsey Biggs had 13.
Alyssa Showers posted a match-high 16 digs, and Malam and Fandry chipped in with seven apiece. Weber added two blocks.
Biola hit .307 as a team compared to .195 for the Lady Lions, and the Eagles held an eight to three advantage in blocks.
Lindenwood (34-13) resumes pool play tomorrow with a 1 p.m. match against No. 6 California Baptist. The Lancers held off No. 21 Bellevue in five sets earlier today in the other pool play match.
