Lindenwood Ends Season on Winning Note, Defeats Bellevue in Five Sets

The No. 20 Lindenwood women's volleyball team prevailed in five sets over No. 21 Bellevue Thursday afternoon in the team's final match of pool play at the 2010 NAIA Volleyball National Championship presented by Siouxland Sports Medicine Foundation in Sioux City, Iowa. The Lady Lions won 25-18, 25-21, 24-26, 23-25, 15-6.

Tied at seven early in the first set, Lindenwood strung together seven straight points to grab a 14-7 lead. The run was fueled by a pair of kills from Kristy Dreisewerd and an ace from Kelsey Biggs. From there, the Lady Lions would eventually stretch the lead to eight before settling for a 25-18 win.

Lindenwood seized control early in the second game, racing out to a 9-4 lead, sparked by a pair of kills from Krista Yoder and Ellen Fandry each. After Bellevue trimmed the deficit to 11-7, the Lady Lions used an 8-2 run to put the game away.

In the third, Bellevue jumped ahead 5-4, but Lindenwood remained close, never trailing by more than two. Down 19-17, a Bellevue attack error and a Fandry kill evened the score between the two squads. The Bruins grabbed a brief 22-20 lead, but the Lady Lions rallied to tie things at 24. However, Bellevue would record two straight points to force a fourth set.

The Bruins built a five point lead in the fourth game, but the Lady Lions would stage a late rally. Down 19-15, Lindenwood began chipping away. Three straight points cut the advantage to one, but Bellevue responded with consecutive points to push the lead back to three. Victoria Krause trimmed it to two with a kill, and an attack error by the Bruins narrowed it to one. Bigg's ace tied the game seconds later at 21. The two teams would side out over the next two points, but a Bellevue kill forced game point at 24-23. The Bruins sent the match to a fifth set with an ace on the ensuing serve.

Lindenwood scored the first four points of the fifth set, and eventually saw their lead balloon to 8-3. Leading 12-3, the Lady Lions forced match point on consecutive kills by Fandry and Dreisewerd. Lindenwood won the match on the next play on Fandry's 13th kill of the day.

Yoder and Dreisewerd led the attack with 18 kills apiece, and Katie Weber also finished in double-figures with 10. Biggs finished with 31 assists and three aces, both team highs. Alexandria Malam had a double-double of 28 helpers and 10 digs.

Alyssa Showers logged a match-high 26 digs, and Fandry had 18 to notch her 24th double-double of the season. Patricia Erb added 17 digs. Yoder recorded five blocks, Weber netted four, and Krause had three.

As a team, Lindenwood hit .232 compared to .186 for Bellevue. In the three sets the Lady Lions won, the team hit .243 or better, including .421 in the fifth game. Lindenwood owned a nine to five advantage in blocks, and had just two serve receive errors after having eight in its first two matches this week.

The Lady Lions finish the season 35-14, and won the HAAC tournament championship for the fourth time in the last five years.
