Storyline
Finally, the Lindenwood baseball team will play at home. The Lions will take on Indiana University Southeast in the home opener of the 2010 season, at the Lou Brock Sports Complex.
Lindenwood will try to regain the form from the first eight games of the season when they started, 8-0. Over the last six games the team is 1-5.
Indiana Southeast comes into the game as the preseason pick to win their conference and have compiled an overall record of 2-3.
Last Week's Results
Last weekend the Lions were once again on the road against a ranked opponent. This time it was against No. 11 Tennessee Wesleyan. Lindenwood would end the weekend with a record of 1-3.
The Lions were just one pitch away from a win in game one. With the Lions leading 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Tennessee Wesleyan put two runners on and then connected on a three run, walk-off home run.
It was deja vu in game two. With the game tied in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Bulldogs once again hit a three run, walk-off home run for the win.
Finally in game three the Lions got a win. After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning the Lions battled back to take a 3-1 lead. The Bulldogs would score a late run but Lindenwood would hold on for their first win of the series. Starter
Zach Malawey went seven complete innings giving up just one earned run, six hits and struck out nine. The win was his fourth of the season.
In the final game of the series Tennessee Wesleyan jumped out early on the Lions and ended up winning, 7-1. The game was the last of 14 games on the road to start the season.
Award Time
Junior starting pitcher
Zach Malawey was named Heart of American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week for his performance against Tennessee Wesleyan last weekend.
The Florrisant, Mo. native won his fourth game of the season last weekend when he pitched seven innings, surrendering six hits, two runs while striking out nine.
For the season, Malawey has compiled a perfect record of 4-0, an ERA of 4.74, 36 strikeouts in 24.2 innings and one complete game.
Stalwarts
So far this season only two players have started every game. Senior
Frank Corpus and junior
Shelby Anderson have been the only constant in the lineup this season.
Home Cookin'
For the first time this season the team will finally play on their home field. After playing their first 14 games away from St. Charles they will play back-to-back weekends at the Lou Brock Sports Complex. In 2009, the squad compiled a 14-8 record at home.
Goin' Deep
Shelby Anderson has started the 2010 season showing some major power. In just 14 games, the junior has connected on six bombs, which is the third most in the country.
Swiping Bags
Stolen bases has been a big part of the early season. The Lions have at least one stolen base in all but four games and have totaled 21 on the year. The total is the 24th most in the whole country.
Bryce Holland leads the way for the team with seven stolen bases. Earlier in the season Lindenwood swiped a season-high four bases against Bacone.
Going The Distance
Already this season the team has four complete games. Zach Malwey leads the team with two, while
Evan Vinyard and
Randy Serrato each have one. A year ago the Lions compiled nine complete games.
Errorless Baseball
When the team has committed one or no errors they are 7-1. On the contrary if they commit two or more they have a record of 2-4.
Streaking
Sophomore utility player
Dylan Lowery is currently on a nine game hitting streak. This is the longest streak of the season for any player. So far this season Lowery has had a hit in every game he has started. His .393 average leads the team.
Cashing In
When the team has gotten a runner on third base with less than two outs, they have driven that man in, 68 percent (26-for-38) of the time.
HAAC Champs
For the second consecutive year the Lions were the HAAC Champs. In 2009 they complied a 32-8 conference record and also won four straight games in the conference tournament to be crowned the tourney champs.
Rankings
The 2009 season ended with the Lions being ranked 15th and at the start of the 2010 season they are ranked 12th which is the highest of any HAAC school.
Scouting The Grenadiers
Indiana Southeast comes to St. Charles with an overall record of 2-3. The Grenadiers play in the KIAC conference but have yet to participate in a conference game.
In the early season Indians Southeast has had some struggles scoring some runs. So far this season their opponents have outs cored them 38-18.
Leading the way for this year's team in the early season is Daniel McDonald who is leading the team with a .375 batting average and three RBIs. Cameron Conner is also hitting over the .300 mark at .308. On the hill, Adam Limpke is the leader. Limpke has started one game and gone the distance for the shutout win.
Ben Reel enters his second season as the head coach for his alma mater, Indiana University Southeast. At the age of 25, Reel is one of the youngest head coaches in collegiate baseball. In the 2009 spring season, Reel led the Grenadiers to an impressive 33-21 mark. This was two wins shy of the school record in just his first season as a collegiate head coach.

Next week the Lions will once again be home. They will play their first HAAC games of the season against Benedictine. They will also take on Harris Stowe on Sunday.
